  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Went to my local Hyundai dealership today for the NH state inspection and found two deep gouges on my front driver side rim, while washing the car an hour later. Needless to day, I am pissed. The car has less than 4800 miles on it. The car is stored in the winter and has never been driven in the rain. The car is flawless and I do whatever it takes to keep it that way. I thought I could trust this dealership with my car. I cannot imagine the person, doing the inspection, not knowing they did any damage. At the very least, they should have told me. Maybe they thought I would not notice. I cannot see this as anything but a dealership issue. I cannot think of any driving situations that would create this kind of deep curved gouge, other than equipment in a service bay, if they decide to blame me for it.

I left a message with the service manager about this situation. Everyone at the service department has already left for Easter weekend. I am not a happy camper at this point. I am not sure what to expect from them going forward.

With that little bit of yellow paint, it almost looks like it could have had one of those parking boots on it.

Looks like whatever scraped the rim, also go the tire in the same swipe.

I don't know why anyone would take a car to a dealer for a state inspection. I would want someone who does inspections all day long, every day, to do it, and not someone who occasionally does it. Since your car was being inspected, I wonder if it had something to do with being on a "dynamometer" to simulate driving conditions (like a treadmill for your vehicle)?

Touché, Inspector Clouseau.

I m very sorry this happened to you. What I would do, if you have a rimguardX in your area, get an estimate and send to Manager at your dealer

Looks to me like the driver hit the swing arm on the lift while he was putting the car in or backing out of the service bay. I'd be pissed but accidents happen and before blowing a gasket wait until you hear the dealer's reaction and/or solution.

My dealer provides free annual state inspections to cars purchased at their dealership. Why would I take it elsewhere?! If they did not, I would still go there vs. Joe's Garage.

Rawhide, you may need to go straight to the owner of the dealership to get satisfaction. Of course, you should begin your complaint with the service manager. Some years ago I took my new '89 Thunderbird to the Ford dealer where I had purchased the car. The car was only a few months old and had a dash rattle that needed to be found. When I picked up the car, not only had they not fixed the dash rattle, but they had cracked the dashboard. It took me several weeks of dealing directly with the owner of the dealership before the dashboard was replaced. All the shop people wanted to do was to deny, deny, deny!

What a piss off.
See what type of apparatus they use while doing your work, see if it fits the score.
Tough one, I'd be severely P.O.'d too
Was it a safety inspection or emmisions or what, anything to do with brakes, tires??

So far, I have left 2 voice messages and sent 1 email with pictures of my rim to the service manager and I heard nothing. So, I drove down to the dealer this morning to find out what is going on. It appeared he was out for the day. I found it strange that his out of office was not set up, seeing how they are striving for "5 star customer service".

While there, I looked in the service bay and noticed immediately that every bay has service lifts that match the yellow color found on my rim exactly. Even the sales people that looked at my car agreed that service department probably caused it.

I have a new worry now. What if I cannot get a brand new rim? I looked around on the internet and all you can find are refurbished ones. Not a fan. I have been down that rat hole once before, when one of the rims on my Honda, which I still own, was damaged a few years ago by a local tire shop. At the time, I insisted on a brand new rim, but they talked me into a refurbished one. I wish I had kept the original. Now all of that rim refurbishment surgery has reared it's ugly head. See photo.

I guess I will have to wait and see what happens. I am so pissed off, that I have been considering buying a new G80 5.0 to replace it. The only problem, I like my 1G Genesis styling a whole lot more (I know this is personal preference), especially since it is an R spec. Also, I'm not that crazy about that panoramic sunroof. All I see are future squeaks, leaks and rattles. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. BTW, I am someone who keeps a car 5 to 10 years.

It has been 2 weeks now....

The dealer looked at the video and determined it was indeed caused by the technician doing the inspection. Long story short, I pushed hard to get a brand new rim and after a few days of back and forth, I got it. I also told them I want to see it in a factory sealed box before scheduling the wheel replacement. They complied. It was determined that the tire was not damaged internally, so I did not push for a new tire.

Now, the new wheel is on the car and I am generally happy with it, although the gray painted portion of the wheel is a slightly different shade than the existing rims.

Also, the dealer offered me a free future synthetic oil change. I really hope the dealership learned from this experience and that this type of situation does not happen to anyone else in the future. It was clear to me that the service department was very concerned about their ratings and kept requesting that I would re-evaluate them.

CONGRATS!! That is how you do it!

"The squeaky wheel gets the grease"
Well done

I had some rim damage after my first tire swap. Not as severe as this. More like scuffs. They had their wheel repair guy come out and repair the damage. I could not tell where it was repaired, and so far it's held up perfectly. The said the repair was guaranteed, and since mine is a lease, I was OK with that.

I'm glad that you made out OK.
