  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

The new Sonata is a fine looking car. I ALMOST bought one. The test drive is what pulled me away. After checking it out and listening to the salesman rable on about how it drives like a Lexus, I drove it. Even with the paddle shift and whatever other crap the salesman was talkin', it felt like my '00 Camry. The car is not quick nor fast. I simply didn't enjoy the test drive and decided to get a second hand REAL luxury car.

This is ridiculous. They did this to me and my wife as well - and we ended-up buying a Lexus RX.. STOP telling customers that Hyundai's drive like Lexus'.. They DON'T.. The Genesis and Equus are exceptions because they're high-end models. Otherwise, they don't compete.. The Sonata drives like a Lexus.. Right.....

I recently settled a long dispute with HMA. The settlement included me choosing a new Genesis at a semi-local dealership. My girlfriend went with me when I picked the new car up, as she is in the market for a replacement for her '06 Acura TL. She is considering the Lexus IS250, the Genesis 3.8, and a Sonata. Johnson Hyundai (where I got the car) has a sister Lexus dealership. The Johnson Hyundai salesman listened to her desires, and frankly told her that what she really wants is a Lexus, and that she might be satisfied with a Genesis, but certainly not with a Sonota.

I understand that salesmen are in the business of selling their product to the exclusion of other products, but occasionally you run into one with some integrity.

Great story.. Hopefully that salesman gets a piece of the final sale...

Most salesmen are alike. (Turn them upside down, and they are all alike).
Last week, because my best buddy in Roswell (who is a salesman dream) bought a new 2010 Prius. OK, I decided to get a look at them close-up. Drove to David Maus Toyota in Sanford. The salesmen were standing outside like a bunch of buzzards. Told one of them that I would come back out, but first I had to use their restroom. He not only followed me into the building, but when I came out of the restroom, he was standing by the door, waiting for me. (Lucky that he did not come into the restroom and stand next to me <grin>). I then told him that I just wanted information on the Prius, differences between the Prius 2, 3, 4 and 5, and was not buying. OK, first things first, he sits down and asks me my name. "Bob". What about last name. He got a little peeved that I would not give him my last name. OK, so outside we go to look at Prius'. On the way, he spots a sales manager and talks with him, introducing me. Out to the cars. He gave me some good information and some wrong information, but I just let him talk.

I then told him that I was comparing the Prius to the Fusion Hybrid and the Sonata Hybrid, and if I was going to pay the price of the Prius 5, I would just wait for the MKZ Hybrid. All he could talk about was how the Prius gets better gas milage than any of the other. To talk me into a Prius, all he talked about was milage milage milage. Then he really did not like it when I thanked him and started to leave. He really thought he would sell me a Prius. Even if I was in the market, I would not buy from him due to all the wrong information he gave me. He gave me his card, with various phone numbers, like I'm going to call him. (sure).

So many mistakes... What a crappy dealership..

A (former) local Mitsubishi dealership was this way. Whenever I'd go for parts/oil filters/etc, I'd drive my other car and purposely park nowhere near the Parts department. The line of vultures would eye me to see which one of them would be closest... slap on the fake smile... and them come parading out. "Can I help you?" they'd always yell from 20-30 feet away. "No, I'm here for more parts for the piece of crap I bought at this dealership" I'd yell even louder back to them. Usually stopped them dead in their tracks as other customers looked to see what was going on. The Parts guy was always cool to me - gave me various discounts - because he and the service bay co-workers loved how I treated the sales types. He hated them too - the sales dept. always thought they were the "key" people at the dealership, everybody else should kiss the ground they walk on, etc.

I rarely shop for cars... though I have accompanied friends/family when they are looking to buy. I've seen both extremes of dealerships: the lying slime-ball pushy idiots and those that will say "I don't know, let me go find out" when asked a detailed question. Lexus or Hyundai or Mitsu or Toyota... didn't matter: good and bad experiences both. It all depended on the dealer itself, the owner, and how that owner wanted to do business. The "auto mall" types can be the best or the worst. When I bought my Mitsu (before that dealer merged with another brand and became the slime-ball dealership) the dealership was owned by the same group that owned Mazda and a few others in the Cerritos Auto Square. So ONE salesman was able to show me Mitsus, Mazdas, etc. He happened to be a good guy and the dealership philosophy was aimed at customer service/satisfaction: thus no pressure - and easy for me to compare various brands. Other dealership groups though are owned/managed by the pushy sales-at-all-costs types and you can't get any decent service there, nor can you easily compare to other brands. There is one nation-wide group that I refuse to deal with - for car purchases, parts, or service.

The dealer I got my Genesis from participates in the Costco program so there was no bickering over price - and I didn't have a trade-in to add to the problem. It also happened that I arrived at the dealership about an hour before they closed... so by the time I was done with test drives and what-not, they were closed. Since I was ready to buy a few folks hung around for the paperwork and it wasn't bad. I don't know if the finance guy was there or not - I didn't have to fight any of the usual dealer add-on sales pitch. Because of Costco? Because this dealership is ethical/polite? Because I was there so late and they just wanted to get home? Don't know. Others on this forum have said they got the crappy sales tactics from this dealership... so either I got lucky with a reasonable sales guy (he isn't there any more due to permanent injuries suffered in a punk's test drive), Costco, or late hours.

Who was the "ethical/polite" dealer you bought your Genesis from? They'd appreciate a plug...
Thanks

The GF finally settled on a Lexus IS250. The Lexus and Hyundai dealerships involved share an owner, but are managed as seperate businesses. What I did was send a note to the owner, advising him of the extrodinary sales experience we enjoyed at both dealerships, and that the sales staff at the Hyundai dealership is the reason we picked his Lexus dealership. He (or his office) responded, and I got a call from the Hyundai Sales Manager thanking me for the plug.

As quick as we are to make noise about poor service/products, it is important to do the same when we get exemplary products/service.
