  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Alright, so I really like the Hyundai Genesis, don't get me wrong, but would you guys recommend this car for an 18 year old? I truly love the design, plus the fact that not many people know what it is. The two other cars on my mind are the new nissan 370z, and the cadillac cts. but compared to the two cars that i just mentioned, the genesis 4.6 has a much more powerful engine, not to mention all of the luxurious features for about the same price.

I have been doing car research for the past 2-3months, and when i went to the LA auto show, my dad and I fell in love with the car, and he said without a doubt he would buy me the car if i let him sit in the passenger seat sometimes. he said its a no-brainer. The car is super safe, nice looking, comfortable, powerful, exclusive, and not as expensive as any other car like it. I definetly value his opinion (since he's the one who's buying);). but, I guess im just getting a second opinion, but what do you guys say? Is it good for an 18 year old?

Would you dad consider adopting me? The only car anyone ever gave me was 1960 VW Beetle (and that was in 1971 when it was 11 years old).

It is hard to compare a 370Z with a Genesis, since they are not even near to being in the same class in terms of size, handling, etc. I suppose the Genesis is safer, but not sure which one would be the better chick magnet (I guess it depends on what kind of chicks you are trying to attract).

lol, well, the chicks in my town do like luxury cars as much as they like sports cars. Does the genesis 4.6 drive well in regards to responsiveness/acceleration/handling?

Yes, very well. Even the V6 is quite good.

The 370 is under 5 second car. If you like performance and would like to take your car to the track or to autoX get the 370. If your not planning to do that go for luxury.

My how times have changed . . . . . ..when I was 18 and my dad was going to by my something to get around in, it was Huffy or Roadmaster, as in bicycle! And all I was concerned with was whether I could do a wheelie, not has fast I could go from 0 to 60!

As for your choice, I am not sure you can go wrong with either car. My guess would be that the Z will be a killer insurance wise, but I would gather you could care less about insurance if someone is buying for you!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Well, I learned things the hard way with a 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis--baby blue (aka: THE TANK).

I would say go for the Genesis. @ 18 years old, the 370 is a death trap. The Gen would be better at protecting you when you try to take the curves to fast and will only let you burn the wheels a limited amount. I just remember how I was at 18. :)

Most dad's do not do this for their children, but since yours can afford to and loves you so much to do so, be a good sport and help out $$$-wise. That will assist in telling him that you appreciate what he does and how much you love him!

:)

My 17 and 19 year old daughters LOVE the car... especially the tech package. They are fighting over who gets it when the lease is up. It is a lot of car for the money. You are very lucky.

The only drawback is that everybody would think you are driving your parents car. If you can live with that then go for it, it's a great car.

I definitely agree with all of you. i do consider myself fortunate, and I will certainly help out with the money (I've already saved enough for the down payment, which my parents don't know about). In terms of safety I would go for the genesis in a heartbeat, and in terms of performance I guess im tied up. Doesnt more horsepower mean better performance? I understand weight, torsional rigidity, suspension, and length have a lot to do with it, but when comparing a 332 hp 370z to a 375hp genesis 4.6, I would think that the genesis could outperform the 370z on a mile straight run. I mean look at the official genesis videos on hyundaigenesis.com, it did beat the boxster. Anyway, how does the genesis drive, is it responsive?

Unless you are taking the car to a drag strip or carrying 4-5 passengers (with luggage) the Genesis V8 power is not going to do much other than get you in a lot of trouble. You can only go so fast before your way over the speed limit. The V6 has a lot of power IMO. And you are right about the V8 having to carry extra weight. But you can drive both cars and see for yourself.

You may find this Virginia International Raceway clip of interest, even though it's an Azera V-6, not a Genesis. The driver is race qualified and reached a timed speed (as I recall) of 134mph before he had to slow for the end of the straightaway. Note as he overtakes a Mazda Miata Turbo a little past the 4 minute mark, even generating a bit of accelleration tire squeal coming out of the curve before blowing past the turbo. Expect the Genesis (6 or 8 cyl) to do a bit better with more horsepower and a tighter-than-Azera suspension...

Having raised 3 daughters and still having a 19yr old son at home, I'm sensitive to your questions. And I'm impressed. I'm seeing a lot of maturity in your posts, Mr. Kinetics. My son, who I also consider mature for his age, just bought a 2008 Nissan Frontier. He did his research, weighed all of the decision markers, helped on doing the deal, and signed all of the papers. My wife and I co-signed. We could have paid cash and gotten it for him, but he decided, correctly, that he wanted to do it this way.

IF my son could afford a Genesis like Dad has... he'd do it in a heartbeat since he's driven it a few times. Smart choice Kinetics, if you can swing it.
Keep wisdom #1!

Thank you for your post. I do consider myself mature, and I definitely do my research. I would never go into a situation as big as buying a car without having done my research. Your son seems to be very smart and more than capable for his age. Doing all of the paperwork is really confusing. Anyway, thank you.

Don't not buy this car unless you enjoy porposing down the highway at the slightest provocation. Trust me it's a problem.
