Identifying packages/trim by site?

My son is closing in on 16, so I'm thinking I will keep the 2009 around for him, and then upgrade myself to a 2015 or 2016.

In looking online, most dealers don't identify the trim/option levels, so I am forced to do it by site. I think the easiest way to look at the buttons on the center console to see which buttons are missing. Is this correct?
- base - no buttons for ventilated seats
- signature - buttons for ventilated seats, but missing park assist (I think that's what it is, anyway). It's the the right-middle button.
- Tech - all buttons present
- Ultimate - has the knob plus a bunch of buttons.

I'm trying to decide which trim I want. I would love to have the HUD that comes with the Ultimate package, but not sure it's worth the extra cost for that. I understand that it comes with some other stuff, but not too concerned about those.

If I can live without the HUD, then the tech package is what I am after. So If I see a center console with all buttons present and accounted for, can I assume it has the Tech Package?

I had the same issue for mine
your answers are totally right

for exterior, if parking sensors --> tech or ultimate package
for exterior, if headlight washers --> HTRAC (AWD)
for interior, look at the buttons by the shifter --> Look for the parking sensor button = tech package
for interior, if there is a rotary knob by the shifter --> ultimate.

For the US anyway.

Opinions vary, but for me, it is Ultimate or nothing. I love the HUD. When using navigation the next turn is on the windshield as is the blind spot notification. Nicer seats, better trim.

If I'm going to buy a luxury brand car, I want the luxury. If my budget only allowed me to get the base model, I'd get a fully decked out Sonata instead. If you go to a top steakhouse would you order a liverwurst sandwich?

Hmmm...having driven both the Ultimate and Tech versions, I’d say, using your steakhouse analogy, both are prime cuts of beef but one can pay extra for the Kobe, yet still be extremely satisfied with a quality ribeye.

I also like a good liverwurst but prefer braunschweiger...

This is all if you're looking at a 3.8. Trims are a little different for the 5.0. I'm not sure about this, but read on some posts here, the 5.0 was not offered in 2016. So would apply only to the 2015. Only two trims for the V8.

The base 5.0 had everything on the 3.8 tech+
Genuine matte finish wood trim and aluminum trim
LED fog lights
illuminated door sill plates
19" alloy wheels
Quad exhaust

The 5.0 ultimate has all the above+
Continuous damping control suspension
HUD
Premium driver information system navigation with 9.2" HD display ( only knock here is no Apple car play/Android auto. Available on the base model ).
Dual mode vent system with CO2 sensor.
Lexicon 17 speaker Discrete Logic 7 surround sound audio system.
Power trunk lid

I was in that same boat, until I saw that the only ultimate trims in my area were all the wrong colors. After looking closer at the tech package, I found that I didn't miss the HUD or the 3 extra speakers, or the bigger screen, or the power trunk, or the CO2 sensor thing. In fact, the other middle button is for the steering wheel heater, which you can get if you get the AWD genny. Then there are no blank buttons in the car.
The tech is 2 or 3k lighter on thewallet, has the same leather (with the contrasting piping), has a 14 speaker system, and is much easier to find a good deal with low miles.
Just my two cents, as I just bought my 2015 tech a week ago after months of scouring for the right ultimate that never came.

IMHO, easiest way to tell is by the interior:
I've never seen a "base" Genesis...but they won't have the Lexicon badges on the speaker grills nor the pano roof.
Signature: Lexicon speaker grills, will be missing the Parking sensor button in the middle by the arm rest and only the 4.3" digital dash display.
Tech: Adds the missing parking button sensor in the middle, 7" digital dash display, more safety stuff/buttons to the left of the steering wheel.
Ultimate: 9.2" display and DIS (knob) controller, matte wood dash, HUD, power trunk buttons in trunk

Tech actually has the same upgraded seats as the Ultimate, but Ultimate can be had in Ivory too which isn't available in Tech.

I opted for Tech vs. Ultimate since you can't get Apple CarPlay/Android Auto on the Ultimate stereo

Ha! Not sure what steak places you're eating at, but I doubt they have the liverwurst!
I would say it's more like steak vs. pork chops, and I really like pork chops too. And as RobotAIDS points out, not sure it's worth the extra couple grand when all I really want is the HUD.
If I can find a deal in the color I want (really like the pampalona red) then I'll go for it, but timing and funds probably mean I'm eating pork chops.

I found the HUD to be very very nice. I also found the rotary knob and shortcut buttons to be a godsend they seem very intuitive and no leaning forward to hit the screen when driving. I am glad I held out and got the ultimate package. After driving a regular 5.0 the Continuous damping control seems to make the car feel more nimble and smaller. This is however a sample size of 2.

The listing only showed the projector. I don't recall if it came with wiring harnesses or connectors.

Not sure, but I did see it mentioned that it was.

While a god DIY guy may get it installed in place, it seems like it may take quite a bit more to be operational. Could be a simple plug into the computer or a reprogramming of it so all the information shows. . I'd certainly want to know beforehand if i was going to cut a hole in the dash.

I think if you wanted both HUD and Apple Car Play/Android Auto, it would be a lot easier to just buy an Ultimate & swap head units. Maybe not. Or get a 2018 ( Isn't that when both were possible? ).

The 2018 is probably the best move, long term and short term.

tech pkg - driver seat has the cushion extender (will look diff than passenger seat). also, can tell if it has AWD by the HTRAC decal on the rear trunk.

what i always do is get the VIN and go to a hyundai dealer site that lets you look at window stickers (for example bloomingtongenesis.com) and plug the VIN of the one you are looking at into the URL in place of the existing VIN. then you can see all options and the MSRP. works for used cars - doesn't have to be brand new.
