  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My apologies if this problem has been posted already. I searched but couldn't find anything.

This is happening on a new 2020 Genesis G70 (Elite Package).

I have an iPhone XS Max with the most current iOS software. I'm trying to import my contacts into the Navigation System via USB. I get a message every time that the USB device can't be found. I know USB works because CarPlay works fine and the car knows the phone is attached.

The Genesis video on YouTube to do this seems easy and straightforward. But, of course, it hasn't been that easy for me.

I've tried exporting my contacts, putting them on a thumb drive, and importing them from the thumb drive...but I get a message that there is no valid address book on the thumb drive.

I'm relatively tech savvy...but this has me baffled.

Hopefully someone can walk me through this so I can get it to work. Or post a link where this particular problem has already been discussed.

Thank you very much.

Would be my guess that with CarPlay active you cannot import via USB, as CarPlay has control.

have you tried removing the CarPlay connection from within the phone so the car doesn’t connect to CarPlay?

It’s in settings —> general —> CarPlay on the phone

Yes. I have tried to do it without CarPlay active using only the "Import from USB" command from within the car's Navigation application only. I get the same error message.

I may have misspoke. I haven't tried disconnecting CarPlay from within the iPhone settings. It looks like that means to tell the iPhone to "Forget this vehicle" (the G70) and then set up CarPlay again from scratch if the import works. I will definitely try that. Thank you.

I just tried it again with CarPlay completely disabled from the iPhone. I still get the same error message that the car doesn't detect the USB device. I also tried both USB ports and they both give me the error message. It's readily apparent that aside from the "Import Address Book using USB" function of the Genesis' Navigation System the USB connection to the phone works just fine. When the phone gets plugged in you can feel it vibrate, the charging icon shows that the phone is charging via USB, and CarPlay works just fine when I enable it. This is more frustrating than anything else. I don't absolutely need my Address imported into the Navigation System because I'll probably use CarPlay for navigation most, if not all, of the time. It's just the fact that I can't get such a simple thing to work that's killing me.

Why don’t you just let Bluetooth import your contacts?

My contacts imported just fine using bluetooth. That imports them into the Phone function not the Navigation System. They show up there just fine. The Navigation System doesn't recognize that my contacts are already in the Phone section. The only way the Navigation System let's you import contacts is through USB. There's a specific menu item to do just that. There is no similar option to do it through Bluetooth.

What does the navigation system use contacts for? Do you mean addresses?

Yes. My apologies if I wasn't clear. I do mean addresses. Here's a link to the YouTube video that shows just how easy the entire process is supposed to be.

Did this ever get answered? I’m having the same issues.
I'm afraid not. I gave up on trying to get it to work. I use CarPlay if I need to quickly a location from my contacts. If I decide to use the Genesis navigation system I enter the location manually and then add it to my saved locations. Not a solution I know.

i’ve never tried this but I can speculate that the iPhone needs to give permission to the car for it to access the phone’s data. This would be different permissions than CarPlay. Similar to giving your computer permisssion to acces files on the iPhone when you plug it in via USB.

So Might be a permissions setting on your phone that helps?

Anyway, I almost never enter addresses into the Nav because the voice option works so well. Especially since you cannot use the touchscreen to enter anything while driving (unlike my other cars). And of course once the address is in the history, it’s easy to access it again from the “previous” list.

That's a good thought. I'll give it a try. Thank you.

I've been fumbling around trying to accomplish the same thing on my 2021 G80, unsuccessfully, and I'm beginning to think this functionality is only for moving addresses from one vehicle to another, but not for importing addresses from a phone. When I go to the equivalent setting on the G80, the message that appears on the screen explicitly refers to importing addresses from "compatible vehicles". So if you had accumulated a lot of previous destinations or hand entered destinations in your old car, you could export them to USB and import them via USB into your new car. If I'm right, this is definitely not as useful as a wholesale import from a phone.

Thank you. I agree. At least I’m finding out I’m not the only one with this issue.

It’s not an issue if something doesn’t work the way you’d prefer it to work. If it works as it is designed to that would seem to be “good enough.”

Thank you for policing the semantics on this thread. I used the word issue deliberately as opposed to saying problem. I’m open to suggestions as to what word you’d find acceptable.

Hopefully, you’ll get your issues resolved.
