  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Quite new to all of this, bought my G80 Sport yesterday as well as the JB4, OCC, Sparks, etc. It's at ~50k miles and runs like an absolute dream. I've done some research and I'm seeing that it's doing preventative maintenance long before, and I'm sure sure how quickly carbon build-up happens. Should I worry about getting it cleaned? What's the process and how expensive is it? I'm quite the mechanical noob, but looking forward to having this beast on the road, tuned, and safe.

I've read conflicting information about carbon buildup, where some mechanics are saying deposits can be problematic within 15-20K miles, and others suggesting that it would be wise to get the valves cleaned somewhere between 50k and 75k miles for optimal performance.

Some enthusiasts suggest that certain solvents can loosen and remove deposits, while others say that the "proper" way to do it is mechanical removal of the carbon crust with special tools, or walnut shell blasting.
