Is the coasting function a random event?

Everything is apparently set correctly: Coasting is set in Vehicle Settings, traveling Eco mode at >35mph on a level road (pg. 5-52, owner's manual). There are times when Coasting shows on the LCD and then there are times when foot off accelerator, but no coasting occurs. Is there some kind of "trick" to get the car to coast...like having to first quickly depress the accelerator, then when releasing accelerator, the car will go into coast?

Also, if I'm in Custom, with Custom set to Eco, Sport steering, should coasting work?

And then there is how to get the car to coast when in Smart mode. I don't really understand the manual's explanation on how do Smart Eco to get car to coast.

Coasting will work only in Eco and Smart Eco modes and when " certain conditions" are met,

. The Drive Mode is set to the ECO mode
• The driver's accelerating style is SMART ECO in SMART mode
• The shift lever is in D (Drive) • The Cruise Control/Smart Cruise Control button is OFF
• The accelerator or brake pedal is not depressed • The vehicle's speed is within 35 100 mph (55 – 160 km/h) range
• The road gradient is within -5~+5% range

You get in to Smart Eco mode when you set Smart mode and then you drive slow,

• SPORT mode : SPORT mode provides sporty but firm riding.
• CUSTOM mode : The driver can separately adjust modes of each driving system.

Various driving situations, which you may encounter in SMART mode
• The driving mode automatically changes to ECO mode after a certain period of time, when you gently depress the accelerator pedal (Your driving is categorized to be economical.).
• The driving mode automatically changes from SMART ECO mode to SMART NORMAL mode after a certain period of time, when you sharply or repetitively depress the accelerator pedal.
• The driving mode automatically changes to SMART NORMAL mode with the same driving patterns, when the vehicle starts to drive on an upward slope of a certain angle. The driving mode automatically returns to SMART ECO mode, when the vehicle enters a leveled road.
• The driving mode automatically changes to SMART SPORT, when you abruptly accelerate the vehicle or repetitively operate the steering wheel (Your driving is categorized to be aggressive.). In this mode, your vehicle drives in a lower gear for abrupt accelerating/decelerating and increases the engine brake performance.
• You may still sense the engine braking performance, even when you release the accelerator pedal in SMART SPORT mode. It is because your vehicle remains in lower gear over a certain period of time for next acceleration. Thus, it is a normal driving situation, not indicating any malfunction.
• The driving mode automatically changes to SMART SPORT mode only in harsh driving situations. In most of the normal driving situations, the driving mode sets to be either in SMART ECO mode or in SMART NORMAL mode

I am meeting all these requirements, and yet the car will coast some of the time. My thought here is that when in Eco mode, maybe I'll occasionally accelerate a bit too much, and that will reset some configuration that will delay the car's going into coasting???

Understood. But what is the mph range for slow? Most of my driving in the neighborhood is around 35-50mph. Again, could it be the occasional acceleration that throws things off?

I wonder how long that "period of time" is? When in Smart and not gas assing it on a straight and level road, still no coasting.

This car is smarter than I am when it comes to its functions. If it does not operate as I think it should it is because I am not aware of the function parameters or have not properly selected the parameters. I have not discovered a "fail" yet, except for the squidgy blob behind my steering wheel.

As I am learning, you are quite correct as the problem is me and not the car. And this goes to show how important these forums are in helping one maintain their sanity (by answering questions) as they try to catch up with the car's technology.

Even if you have the cruise on but not set 0 coasting will occur.

Also, I never had a single coasting popup in the center cluster until I got V13.5 of the firmware and I know you are on v12.5.

I guess I'm just lucky. Anyway, through bugging Genesis Connect, I was able to get them to have MapnSoft register my car's VIN. And, I just ordered the 13.5 update....Hurray!
