  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have driven Genesis 3.8 vehicles since August of 2008. I drove a 2009 for three years, and now have 3 years and 64,000 miles on my 2012. Overall I love the cars. The roomy cabin and the smooth, quiet ride make driving a real pleasure. The 2009 produced a jarring ride over bumpy roads, but that was my only complaint, and I don't drive many bumpy roads. But with the 2012 I have had nothing but problems with the electronics. It has frustrated me to no end. The rear seat heater had to be replaced, the backup camera broke and had to be replaced, the parking sensors no longer work, and the cruise control no longer works. And the entertainment system--oh the entertainment system! I would say I have had the car in the dealer at least 12 times for the entertainment system. The CD changer failed, ate my CD's and was replaced-- twice (yes I still listen to CD's). It has failed again, and is now out of warranty according to the dealer. The AM radio reception is terrible, and even local stations are frequently unintelligible (yes I still listen to AM radio). They replaced the radio twice, replaced the "audio head", replaced the back windshield (for the antenna), and still no improvement.

The lease is up on the 2012 and I want to buy a 2015--I really do. I have test driven a '15 and like it. I love that Hyundai is competing with the luxury vehicle makers at prices that provide great value, and I want to support that. But I have been so frustrated with the 2012 systems constantly failing that I just can't seem to pull the trigger. What shall I do? Someone please help me........

FWIW, I've been watching this forum pretty closely since I bought my 2g in June and I haven't seen, nor experienced for myself, any sign of the random, repetitive bugs that plagued the earlier years. In fact, I think the only thing I've seen complaints about that appeared on more than one car is the sunroof rattle issue which seems to have been an early production problem.

IMO, for the first year of a new platform, Hyundai has done an OUTSTANDING job on this car. Buy one and enjoy. :)

Rock solid so far!
A worthy first attempt at a brand new model.;)

Jump in with both feet. You wont be disappointed. With that said, I would still recommend getting the extended warranty just for assurance. :D I have had mine a couple months now with zero issues.

I went through a similar journey as Coug. 2009 - virtually no faults in 3 years, but I also had a lot of minor issues with my 2012 and it spent a lot more time at the dealer than the 2009. In the last 6 months of ownership things did settle down, but I too wondered about replacing it with a 2015. In the end, none of the price-comparable alternatives really came close, so I went with a Genesis again. After two months and just over 3000 miles, I am delighted and have no regrets so far. The improved ride is phenomenal and the interior is a significant step above the 2012 - not that I had any complaints with the earlier cars in that department.
Go for it. I very much doubt you will be disappointed.

But with the 2012 I have had nothing but problems with the electronics. It has frustrated me to no end..

I have a 2012 3.8 Tech with almost 50K miles, and so far, the electronics have been rock solid for me. I wish I could reprogram certian aspects, but it all works!

I had the exact same dilemma as you. My 2012G was awful for the first two years of the three I owned it. I replaced the head unit three times. When the 2015G came out I really loved it but questioned why on earth I would buy another Hyundai when my 12G spent more time in the shop than any other new car I have owned.

I even called Hyundai to discuss whether or not the head unit was the same in the '15G as the '12G. I was assured the head unit in the new model is completely different from the first generation.

I took the plunge a month ago and I'm glad I did. The car is much improved. The voice recognition isn't as good as the first generation but otherwise the new electronics and everything else are far superior. If you love the car buy it. It's not a Lexus in terms of quality or reliability (despite what others say here) but it is much improved. Go for it.

In 1 month you are able to judge the reliability and quality of a car? Tell me where you bought your crystal ball, I want one also.

My 2010 had the amp replaced, a defective light housing and the drivers side seat track replaced other wise it was a pleasure. The 2012 never was in the shop for a single item except oil change.

Yes the car is completely new however mechanics such as the transmission and engines have been refined to perfection since 2009. They have definitely learned from their mistakes in general and actually done something about it. My gut feeling is the 2015 will never see the shop except for maintenance.

Yes after one month I feel this is a better car and Hyundai has upped their game. I base that on my personal experience. With my first G, I was already having the unexplained "no radio sound" at this point in the game. Many others in this forum had the same issue. I also had a significant, non-electronic issue. I still have concerns about the reliability of this car but I believe this generation is better than the first generation.

The smart money would not buy a new model in its first year of production. I needed/wanted a new car and I am not that smart.

I don't doubt your past experience, but my 2010 was for the last 5 years almost trouble free. Yes, they had to replace the backup camera. The entertainment system froze maybe once a year - had to restart teh car. Bluetooth pairing was pain in the ass - but I'm tweaking my phones daily - so that was kinda expected. The driver's seat heater worked half-assed.

With that said I still consider it a virtually trouble free experience.
Now to 2015 - only had it for 3 months now. The navi froze once already - and it was quite weird. Had to lube the sunroof - you can find a huge thread in re: sunroof rattle. Other than that this car is a solid performer.

Pick your poison :)

What is the build date on your car? I have had zero issues so far on mine.

Thanks everyone. I've been a loyal Genesis owner, but my love-hate relationship with the 2012 has been rocky. I guess I just needed some "forum therapy"!

I'm going to pull the trigger on the 2015. I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Glad to hear. What color combo have you decided to get? Be sure to post up some pics when you get it home!

I was always curious, since you owned a 2012, how is the 2015 ride all that much better? I've got a 2012 3.8, and I think the ride is pretty phenominal. I under stand being better than the stiff ride in the 2009, but how did they improve on the 2012?

I have a premium 2010 V6, and i am often happy I didn't go with the Tech version, only because it seems that problems with the head unit were more common with the Tech.

I have been looking to replace my 2010, and just drove the 2015 Genesis.

But I am going to play devil's advocate, and say that I would always consider voting with my feet, and not getting a new Genesis. That is, if you really look into your soul, and are convinced the 2012 car was the problem.

Having said that, I have researched cars exhaustively and there is nothing close to the value of the new Genesis for what you get.

There are arguments about making decisions from personal experience vs statistical probability. My wife believes in the former, and because I was trained in the sciences, I would laugh at her choices, and then get burned again.

So now I think that trusting one's own intuition matters a lot. And don't presume you will like the car until you drive it carefully. I was surprised that I enjoyed driving my 2010 more than the V6 2015, because I am not ready to give up hydraulic steering. I already put an aftermarket suspension on my 2010, and it was NOT as good as the Lotus engineered suspension in the 2015, but so close I was thrilled to go back to my old car, that also had the immediacy of acceleration that I treasure. I didn't like the acceleration of the 2012 I drove once when considering the improvements in the ride as a reason to upgrade. I chose to replace the suspension instead, and for me it was a good decision.

But I did find many improvements in the 2015, just not in the items that I valued most. Also, I would be afraid to buy the 2015 until i am comfortable that the sunroof problem has been solved.

I'm not all that worried about "first year of production". The warranty is long and I haven't seen problems with higher end cars in the first year in a long time. Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, Cadillac, Porsche, even Jaguar have been pretty reliable in the first year.

You said the Genesis is still not as good as a Lexus. My wife drives an IS that stickered at $42K. The Genesis is a much better car. She drove an ES and its a much better car than that. We looked at a GS before she got the IS and the Genesis is a nicer car than the GS.

I hear reviewers say the Genesis is not as good as the comparable BMW, AUDI, Mercedes, Lexus but they never seem to break it down or quantify the differences.

I put the 5.0L engine with anyone's for power output and smooth operation. The same with the 8 speed transmission. The electronics are as good as anyone is putting in a car today, at least if you get Ultimate package. I like the styling, wheels and tires are as good as any. Braking is very good. That leaves the subjective areas of fit, finish, quality of materials and ride quality.

I just don't see the Genesis falling too short in any of those areas, either.

Where do you see the Genesis calling short?
