  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Bought it used from a Volvo dealership that picked it up at auction. Absolutely flawless car with only 8000 miles. Unfortunately it only had one key and no manual.

Questions I have:

1) Can I download the manual from somewhere?

2) I read that you can use regular unleaded, but the HP is reduced. Is that true? Safe? Negatively affects mileage?

3) Does putting the car in manual mode only let you adjust the shift points or does it also adjust suspension / power / response?

4) Is there any way to disable XM radio from the 'mode' button on the steering wheel? I don't plan on using it, but it's a pain to bypass.

Thanks for all the help! This is quite a car!

The V8 is designed for premium gas. However, it will run fine with regular. I have always used premium since .30 per gallon over a year is only a few hundred dollars which isn't much considering the price of the car or 6k to 8k for an engine. I also use synthetic oil and beware; only use OEM oil filters. there have been problems with aftermarket oil filers in the Genesis.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm not too concerned with the price factor in the gas. More just an overall information question.

When I try to register the vin at myhyundai, it says I need to contact the dealer. I'm assuming that's because the previous owner probably has it registered.

Yep. so a call to the dealer may help or maybe wait a few days for the owner information in Hyundai's web site to be updated.
these may help out.

Since you didn't buy it from a Hyundai dealer, You'll have to go to a Hyundai dealer to get help to set it up.

Manual shift mode only controls shifting.
You'll never miss the 7 horsepower downgrade by using regular.
Hyundai recommends using "Top Tier" gasoline. If you use cheaper brands, they recommend using their gas additive every oil change.

I always use Chevron. Don't mind paying a little extra for premium if it positively affects the vehicle.

You can use 87 octane without any issue. Paying for 91 is just tossing money away. You will never feel any difference in performance as you cannot tell 7 to 10 HP by seat of the pants on a 400+ HP car. The mileage will actually be same or perhaps even a little better using 87 due to the slower burn of the lower octane.

Turbo engines benefit substantially from higher octane, but the normally aspirated GDI engines do not see much benefit that can be perceived by the driver. And the 87 will in no way ever harm the engine.

It is a personal choice. But if the engine runs fine with no detrimental effects to life, I cannot see the reason to go for an extra few HP which cannot be felt.

2012 manuals:

They will pretty much be 99% identical mechanically. Big difference is Bluelink that wasn't available in 2012.

2) I read that you can use regular unleaded, but the HP is reduced. Is that true? Safe? Negatively affects mileage?
True. Totally safe. Your driving style will affect mileage more than the fuel, but yes some folks have seen up to 10% difference with 93 vs. 87. Some say their butt-dynos can feel it. Pick yer poison and knock yerself out.

3) Does putting the car in manual mode only let you adjust the shift points or does it also adjust suspension / power / response?
Just shifting.

4) Is there any way to disable XM radio from the 'mode' button on the steering wheel? I don't plan on using it, but it's a pain to bypass.
No.

. . . The mileage will actually be same or perhaps even a little better using 87 due to the slower burn of the lower octane. . .

While I don't argue with your conclusion, I'm afraid you got the cause backwards. High octane fuel has a higher flashpoint for a more controlable combustion. It actually burns a little bit SLOWER, and it is harder to ignite.

That's why detonation is often eliminated by going to a higher octane. These engines have, I believe, knock sensors so the detonation problem is minimized when using lower octane fuel. But performance is reduced when the knock sensors do their thing.

(I'm just trying to be helpful, not argumentative).

Yes, you are correct. I was typing along and brain farted - However the result is correct - lower octane "generally" provides a little better MPG and there is really no seat of the pants gain in terms of performance by going to the higher octane on these engines. Certainly no damage will result from running lower 87.

I certainly agree!

Still, I'd be reluctant to really push it hard while climbing a long grade on a hot day with a full tank of ethanol-laced unleaded regular. . .

My F150 has Ecoboost. It is twin turbo V6 and much higher cylinder pressures than the Genesis. I have pulled hot southwest mountains towing with nearly wide open throttle. Never a problem and that truck has nearly 80k miles on it now. The engine management is tuned to deal with it and the GDI makes it possible.

But this is my opinion. If someone is a little unsure and wants to spend an extra couple bucks for a tank when in a hot climate and pulling mountains - hey, thats fine. But to run 91 around town in normal driving is just a waste of money. Unless your butt can feel 10hp in a 400+hp car. Some might claim too.... but I can't.
