Key fob question

Hi folks,
So I foolishly bought a 2015 Genesis with only one key fob. I didn’t realize how important these dang things are. Dealer wants about $450 for a new fob and programming, but I found a guy who says he can do it all for $285.
That sounds like a better deal to me, and I don’t mind if he doesn’t provide the metal key.
Are there any holes in my plan?

Is it credited to leave the metal key in a key box, leaving the spare fob in the trunk with a spare battery?

I don’t think you will be able to lock the car from the outside door handles since the key is in the trunk. You will need to lock from the fob each time you leave the car.
What is your purpose leaving the fob in the trunk. If the caris already locked you won’t be able to get it anyway.

Are you taking the battery out of the fob? Then you can do it. If the fob is active it does not allow you to lock your "keys" inside. If you lock the car though, you'd not be able to open the trunk to retrieve it. If you never lock the car then you can keep the spare that way. FYI. if your fob battery does, you can hold the key right next to the Start button and it will work.

Yes, I would take the battery out of the fob and leave the metal key hidden in a little box on the exterior of the car.

Interesting. the fob must have a passive RFID chip.

Do you think an independent locksmith is capable of programming a new fob for me? I had read that the Germans make the key fobs a dealer-only service. There’s a youtube video of a dude programming a fob using something called Smart Pro.
