  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm hearing a slight knocking on cold start up for about 20 seconds is this normal?

I would try switching to a full synthetic. Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy would be an excellent choice.

This is particularly important on the V6 since the oil filter is on top and drains back into crankcase after sitting for awhile.

A heavier weight oil may help, but I would not count on it. You are likely hearing the fuel injectors during the first several seconds of startup. With regards to the location of the oil filter, ALL engines will experiencie the oil draining back into the crankcase. This has nothing to do with the location of the oil filter. The location of the oil filter determines how easy it is to access. Hyundai did a fine job in this regard. A 0-XX weight oil will actually leave much less "film" than a 20-XX, 10-XX, or even 5-XX weight oil. The first number determines the "thickness" (viscosity) when the oil is cold. If you suspect the oil is causing your tapping, a higher cold viscosity number will likely help. I know on my motorcycle, if I use a 10w30 oil, i get a little bit of tapping from the motor when cold. If I use a 15w40 or 20w40, there is no tapping.

In all honesty, the noise you are hearing is probably nothing to worry about at all. I would turn the audio up a notch or two, buckle your seatbelt, return your seat back and tray table to their original upright position, and prepare for takeoff.

My V6 clatters pretty bad on startup too. The dealer claims that it is the timing chain/gears. They also mentioned the Azera does it as well. My Genny is leased, so I am not that concerned. It only lasts for a few seconds. However, if I was buying the car and keeping it long term/high mileage I would definately switch to synthetic oil to see if it helps.

I am running Mobil 1 5W-30 Extended Performance in my V6, and it does help. I plan on switching to Mobil 1 0W-30 AFE this winter and may stick with that from now on (I would not recommend a European Formula 0W-30 from Castrol or Amsoil for the Genesis).

My Borrego Limited V8 did this once. It was a ticking like a tappet or hydraulic cam follower that lost it's prime. It only lasted about 60 sec. or less. I attributed it to the fact that the Borrego sat for almost 2 weeks without being started. If it ever does it again, I'll contact my dealer.

So, what is your current oil level in the engine? Is it between the H and L marks and you're hearing this tapping on start up?
