  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Title. What do we know about long term reliability of these engines, especially the GDI variant? Anyone here have high mileage 3.8 sedans with gdi? I have a 2015 3.8 with about 52k miles and am wondering how much more I can get out of it. Do you think this engine will make it to 250k? Also, what are the common known problems with this lambda gdi engine?

How critical is the valve clearance measurement and adjustment required every 60000 miles?

AFAIK, no one actually does that.
My last cars (not Hyundai) had solid tappets ("lifters") and had the same check/adjust maintenance requirement. They were both at about 250K miles when I traded them, with no engine problems.

To my understanding the engine may get noisy when the valve clearance goes out of spec. I assume that it is random to when the valve clearance will get to the point where it could cause damage to the valve-train itself. My best guess is that the louder the engine valves; the worst the misalignment and the greater chance of an engine failure.

Like mentioned; the engine will most likely run fine well pass 200k miles without any adjustments even if it is noisy due to ticking valves. However, the valves should be adjusted for long term(over 300k miles) reliable operation. Most owners do not keep a Hyundai that long; so no one probably even care enough to adjust the valves on a Hyundai engine.

Most owners that do drive high mileage Hyundai cars will probably just drive the engines with the ticking misaligned valves until they stop working and then dump the car.

This video explains the importance of proper valve clearance in a Hyundai engine.

I'm so glad I just read your thread! I have a ticking sound in my engine, took it to a local dealer, and they said the car was not safe to drive, and the engine would go at any moment and needed to be replaced for $15k. The car is a 2015 Genesis V6 3.0 with 163k miles on it, one owner. I love the car, and i want to keep it a bit longer. You gave me the courage to stick with it.
