  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So there it is. Staring at me. Me staring at it...

The lone 2009 3.8 loaded (tech/premium package) black on black sitting on the small Hyundai lot in my town.

No other Genesis for miles.

I want to hold out. My current car is great, just not that new (2004 Lexus ES 330--black exterior; tan interior, upgraded aftermarket stereo with Nav, Sat radio, Ipod, Bluetooth; only 41000 miles, immaculate shape and paid off).

I test drove the Genesis on a day off for kicks about a month ago. I can't stop thinking about it.

How much, in light of the economy, the fact that its an 09, the fact that its the last one on the lot, do you think I could get it for...

How much do you think they'd give me in for my trade?

Just playing the game in my mind...

Signed,

You're almost certainly not going to get a good deal if you trade in...you'll either get high trade value or a low sales price on the Genesis. They make up for one with the other. I'd say that if you can get a $35-36K for the '09 3.8 Tech including destination, that's pretty good. If you can negotiate that plus get high wholesale book, I'd call that a win.

34k for the Genesis. 10k for your car. BTW, a 6 year old car is not that old. Your car is paid off. I'm a firm believer in driving a car till it explodes, but that's just me.

I agree with TJ about keeping the ES330...especially with only 41K miles on the ticker. That Lexus should be good for many more years of trouble free driving. Heck, you probably have another 20-30,000 miles before you have a "major" service...like the timing belt.

The Nadaguide puts the trade-in value of your car at $15K...mostly because of the $3K boost it gets from the low miles. In comparison it gives an $18K "retail" value. Kelly Blue Book has a more conservative $12K trade-in and a private party sale value of $14K. As you can see, trading a car in yields $2-3,000 less than selling it yourself. About a year ago I paid about $12K for a clean 2003 Acura TL, at a dealership....with 60K miles on it.

If, however, lust wins out, keep in mind the extra you could get through a private sale and always, as was suggested, separate the new car price from the trade-in.

My parents bought a 2009 3.8 in october. Out-the-door price was $34,500.

Five months ago I purchased a 2009 3.8 with Tech package. Using a 2005 Camry with 85000 miles an EXL model 4cly that was in good shape. After the allowance for the Camry my cost was $22000 plus tax, tags etc. The sale price for the Genesis was $30400, now this car had 4000 miles on it but was mint.
With those numbers in mind you should be able to do much better then $35000 as suggested. But then you already have a fine car with small mileage so why bother?
