Looking to buy a 2010 - Please share your experiences

Hi All. The wife and I are currently stuck between two 2010 Genesis sedans. One is a 3.8 and the other is a 4.6. Both are lease returns. The 4.6 has 68k miles and the 3.6 has 56k. She doesn't seem concerned with the mileage because both were leases and it's assumed all maintenance milestones were met. Price is about 2k difference. The 4.6 appears to be fully loaded, the 3.6 does not have the technology package.

Can anyone attest to how well the 2010 has held up for themselves? Should I be concerned with the mileage of the engines? What about the durability of other systems? Any major repairs? I'd like to pick your brains.

IMHO, the decision maker for me would probably be which one could I get an affordable Hyundai-backed service plan (extended wty) on? The technology in the premium package (and esp the technology package) is very expensive to repair (and repair often means replace which can be very expensive).

The semi-bumper to bumper wty (and powertrain wty unless it's a cpo) ends at 60k, so the one that is over that is completely out of wty.

I would do more research than just assuming all services were done on time because they were leases. Leases tend to get only the minimum service to get past the turn-in inspection. Maybe take them to the another Hyundai dealership and have them go through each one in detail. That could easily be the best couple of hundred dollars you could spend.

These can be really good cars, but 60k is a lot of miles and if they haven't been treated well, they could easily be a big headache.

Good luck....search and read many of the threads here. There's a lot of good info here and the people are helpful, but do your legwork first.

I run a 2010 V8 with 18,000 I found her with 14,000 in January. I agree with the previous response when it comes to the HPP. Hyundai Protection Plan. If you get this then the cars history is really a non factor as they will repair the ride under the HPP. Hyundai will run a check based on what they know of the ride and sometimes will not issue a HPP for the car. If that is the case then pass on the ride.

As for the 4.6 vs the 3.8 the tech is worth it as the touch screen and knobs are a stretch and uncomfortable to reach compared to the DIS knob. Plus the 4.6 makes driving a much more enjoyable an experience IMHO. I have been given a 2012 3.8 as a loaner and not been a fan. But that is just me. the 4.6 gives you HID headlights Radar cruise control and the 17 speaker 6 DVD changer cooled drivers seat and cornering headlights.

+1 for the 4.6 Genny.

edit: being a 2010 you wont have to worry about concerns with carbon deposits from DI. since its a 2010 all 2009 issues have been adressed. Look into extended warranty just for piece of mind.

So, is the 17 speaker setup only available in the 4.6? We've found a 3.8 that has the full tech package. It has the 6 disc DVD in it and all of the other bells and whistles.

Definitely going to try to get that car to dealer for a quote. I'd imagine it's a relatively quick but detailed inspection?

The 3.8 w/ tech pkg has the 17pc lexicon as well..it wasn't a 4.6 exclusive

Going off what SGS Auto usually takes for their vehicle inspections (Acura/Honda uses their services for lease turn-in) prob 45min - 1 hour.

The difference between the pre-2012 3.8 and the 4.6 is noticeable, however if you compare the 2012+ 3.8 with direct injection, the difference is much less noticeable. I've also noticed that the v8 cars tend to go through tires a little quicker...this is just based on anecdotal evidence on my part...maybe the v8 drivers just drive faster in the corners so they scrub their tires faster than us 333hp v6 drivers.

I would also suggest that if gas prices remain high and go higher, the v8 will probably fall out of favor quicker than the v6, despite fairly close mpg ratings.

I beg to differ sir. The 2013 3.8 I was given as a loaner with 312 miles on her was no where near the same car as my 2010 4.6. There was most certainly a huge difference in the throttle response and just flat out smoothness of the car under acceleration. The 3.8 put me in mind of the feel you get from a big full size truck that you have to literally mash the gas past 3/4 throttle to get that girl moving; where as in the 4.6 I find myself rarely pressing the gas past 1/4 throttle in every day driving. The 4.6 preforms everything effortlessly where as the 3.8 was making more noise and seemed no where near as capable as the 4.6. Just my observations. However; I defy anyone who has driven the V8 and the V6 back to back and tells me that there is not that big a difference between the two cars.

The numbers may be close but as they say that is just on the paper the real world is quite a different story. Then again the OP is looking to purchase this car for his wife if memory servers; so unless she is a car gal and cares about performance all of this talk is simply for not.

And that's why there are so many different makes, models, sizes, etc., etc. of cars. Because in my opinion, the 2012 v6 is an excellently balanced car, while the handful of 4.6s I drove prior to purchasing mine didn't seem as well balanced to me, for whatever reason. So that's why I own a v6.

Also, as I recall, you are comparing a 6sp and an 8sp tranny. One gear down shift on a 6sp in a v8 will make more of an impact on the rev band where the v6 8sp might well need 2 gears.

My car with 3.6k miles on it is one of the smoothest cars I've driven, so not sure what was up with the 3.8 you drove, maybe something to do with such low miles.

Anyway, drive several and buy the one you love....Take all of these comments as what they are, opinions.

Will two people who own a 2012+ 3.8 and an any year 4.6 just get together already and race several runs back to back? That way we can put to rest this constant argument that keeps popping up.

Having driven both, there is not much difference.

Depends on the driving style of the person who is driving it. Not everyone utilizes the full performance of the Genesis V6. The Genesis V6 is already faster than the vast majority of cars on the road, even if the Genesis V8 is faster. Each person should do a test drive of both cars and decide for themselves what they want/need.

A few points....

Weight distrobution better in v6 vs v8

0-60 pretty close but edge goes to v8

Anything over 60 v8 has market share... pulls hard.

Either car v6 v8 you cant go wrong, i wouldnt be too hung up on either engine

Ppp

Have the 2010 with Twch and could not be happier. We had a Lexus LS430 and my wife liked the power of the V8. She thought the V6 was a dog. We run regular gas only. Don't let people tell you you need to run premium. Get 27 on a trip.

Come on now. A dog, really? My wife's hybrid is a dog. I've never heard anyone refer to a engine with 290 to 333 hp as a dog. Even Jeremy Clarkson, who drives supercars all day long, wouldn't call the Lambda a dog. V8 guys are getting a little hyperbolic now.

Either is a great car, if you pontificate you may well loose both.
My money is on the 3.8...

Re: Looking to buy a 2010 - Please share your experiences

We bought a super nice 3.8. Fully loaded, tech. Saddle interior. It's gorgeous.

the comparison between 4.6 v 3.8 will go on forever on this forum.
those who drove both, but ended buying the 3.8, will say that there isn't much difference.

those who drove both, but bought the 4.6, will say there's a big difference.

of course, i thought there was a big difference, not in actual acceleration times, but in how smooth and effortless the 4.6 is.
the 4.6 just feels like a luxury car.
of note, Consumer Reports, places the 4.6 in the Luxury car category, and places the 3.8 in the entry premium category.
