If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Guys,
I am looking to buy a 2010 V8, with 95K kms. Drove it, was really impressed.
Just looking for real owners input, since these cars are pretty old now, and have had a chance to accumulate miles.
How's reliability been ?
A was looking at a 2013 model first, but then researched and found that it has the Hyundai 8 speed, which is problematic. That deterred me from buying it.
The 2010 V8 has the ZF transmission, which isn't bad as I understand.
What's your average gas mileage?

Any input is appreciated!

Welcome to the forum zheka!

1. 2010-2011 with ZF transmission are very reliable.

2. It depends how you drive. When I drive using "push-n-roll" technique I can get about 22 mpg in the city with my 2011 4.6. When I am in spirited mood, and having fun with my car, and have my SprintBooster V2 turned on to green mode, it goes down to about 17 mpg in the city. On freeway at 75 mph I can get about 25 mpg.

BTW, I am approaching 90,000 miles on my Genny.

Thanks MozartMan.
What about the "blown engine" reports I've seen in one particular thread? Are these engine problems relating to the 2009 model only?

I think that is the case. If I am not mistaken in 2010 Hyundai modified Tau V8 engine little bit and that fixed issue with what ever problem they had with original 2009 engine. And engine got little bit more power.

Good stuff, thanks.
What sort of servicing have you had to get done on your Genesis during your ownership ?

Two recalls (if I remember correctly).

Entertainment head unit was replaced once under warranty. It is known occasional issue on DIS models to lose sound.

Dealer machined front rotors and changed break pads first time. Second time rotors and breaks were replaced. But this is because I drive in spirited mood most of the time in summer. It is so much fun to drive the car in summer on Michelin summer tires and with SprintBooster on.

Cleaned engine head once at the dealership even 4.6 does not suffer carbon build up like those 5.0 DGI engines in R-Spec.

Regular oil change at the dealership.

That's about it. Best car I ever had.

That's actually pretty damn good. Which particular year is your Genesis ?
Did you ever change the oil in the transmission ?
Apparently there is a bit of misconception with regards to this. For example, BMW claims it's got life time fluid inside it. The manufacturer, ZF recommends oil changes every 60K miles.
What about differential oil change? By the way, are these limited slip diffs ?

Thanks,

It is 2011. It is in my signature. Is my signature visible to you?

As far as I know transmission oil change supposed to be changed at 100,000 miles. I will have to check with my dealership.

I am not sure about differential. You will need to search this forum.

Here is my garage on this forum.

Yes, you are right. Didn't notice that.
Thanks for all the info.

Yes, that's right, in Canada.
Is 100K mile intervals is what the Hyundai owner's manual says ?
I was originally looking at a 2013 V6 Genesis, then I read that the Hyundai 8 speed has various problems, which is what deterred me from it.

I attached image of the page from the manual.

But I also remember that service manager at my dealership told me that transmission oil should be change at 100,000 miles.

Interesting, got to check the ZF manual, if such a thing exists
They are the manufacturers after all.
BMW guys are in tune with the issue

I had 2009 V8 4.6L great car, transmission solid however at 130,000 miles head gasket went out ?etiology well maintained at dealership I did do transmission "service " new pan and zf fluid at 100000 miles loved car i recently bought 2011 3.8 21000 miles on it when I got it so far ok

That's not particularly good. I am actually torn between a Lexus GS 350 and the Genesis.
I already test drove the Genesis, beautiful driving experience. But I am a bit apprehensive with regards to its longevity.
I own a BMW that has 430K kms on it, and still drives amazing. This is my benchmark.
Drove the GS 350 too, was OK, not exemplary. Nice interior. I think the interior will hold up better than Genesis's.

^What BMW do you have with 430k on it?

Ah congrats, they are fun.

Thanks, yes they are.
Looking for a good family car now, which is why I am here

My old advice of "never own one of these cars out of warranty" no longer applies to the 2010 since you almost certainly cannot buy a good one at this point. That said, you'll want to understand that Genesis sedans are very cheap to acquire, but very expensive to repair. OEM new parts are only sourced from Korea and imported by HMA, and as such command monopoly prices. Dealers are horrible for markups and labor charges because they're the customer-facing end of that monopoly.

So *IF* you have a good local Hyundai mechanic who knows how to source used parts and replace things like Head Units, HECUs (ABS), transmissions and do minor and major engine work for reasonable prices, then go for it. Have her/him check out the car before you buy it.

2010s had some issues with the Radio Head units and amps. Most 1st model drive train issues had been sorted out by 2010. ZF 6spd trans is generally good.

What about the "blown engine" reports I've seen in one particular thread? Are these engine problems relating to the 2009 model only?

That was with failing (broken) valve springs in the early 2009 4.6. It was fixed later in the 2009 model year.

I think that is the case. If I am not mistaken in 2010 Hyundai modified Tau V8 engine little bit and that fixed issue with what ever problem they had with original 2009 engine. And engine got little bit more power.

The 4.6 engine got more power in 2012 with the refresh, but I've owned both '09 and '12 and the difference between the two engines is minimal; not enough to tell via butt dyno, IMO.

HOWEVER, the variable octane tune (mostly timing) was introduced in 2012 IIRC, and one can easily tell the difference between 87 and 93 in the same car. 5-10% better fuel economy and noticeably more low-end torque with 93, which is where it matters most. So a '12 with 93 is noticeably more punchy than a '09 or '12 with 87. I normally just run 87 since I have another playtoy for hooning.
