  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have noticed that when I use manual mode with the gear shifter, the dash MPG indicator is mad high...like 23-27 mpg in city driving. I usually shift about every 5 mph except to 3rd gear and 8th gear which are hit or miss. Once I shift into 8th I usually don't downshift until the car does it for me. Has anyone else ever tried this? I know the dash MPG indicator is off but it is interesting to see.

Interesting. I've never used the manual shift to shift earlier than it normally would. Just the opposite....I use it so it'll hold the gear longer....for when I want it to stay in a lower gear, for better throttle response during "spirited" driving, or as certain situations in traffic may require. ;)

I'll experiment with it sometime.

Sounds like up shifting soon like that would be worse than using ECO mode. Have you compared the two? Have you been able to do a tank worth to see if there is a difference?

I’ve done it with a few tanks of gas now and it’s consistently about 22 mpg city. Whereas I used to go through a tank a week now it’s 3/4 of a tank per week. Also, I put it into sport mode when shifting so I don’t know if that makes a difference but it seems to have a quicker throttle response. I’m still working everyday in spite of the shelter orders and I went from spending $45-50 week I’m now spending $25-30 with the reduction in price.

I filled up my 5.0 the other day w/ premium for $35! I'm sure going to miss that!

I used to downshift for a long downhill stretch but learned it was too slow. I need to basically drop from 8th to 3rd or 4th to get me to the right speed. It's too many gears. Even with my Sonata, it was too many... not to mention, I had to replace my downshift paddle 3 times. Seems to me, they're not meant to be used all the time. Just once in a while.

It was no problem in my MR2 but with an actual stick shift, I can go from 5th right into 3rd.
