  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

A story and a question....
SO i drive to work in the dark every morning, along many back roads. Headlights in AUTO mode as always. Was using the auto high beam assist to help avoid the hordes of deer that want to play ping pong off the bumper of the G70 this time of year, and I ended up catching up behind a slow poke in a pickup. Fine, I'll just follow him for a while. Figure I'll turn off my hi beams (even though they automatically turned off b/c they were in HBA mode). Pulled the left stick back, high beams turn on in flash to pass mode, OOPS, let go, high beams off... Push the stick forward, high beams turn on in manual mode, OOPS, pull back on stick, high beams cycle off, then on again since i'm in flash to pass mode again. OOPS. try it a few more times and eventually the poor guy in front of me pulls over, gets out of his car, inspects the back of his truck since he thinks i'm signaling him that his car is on fire or something, and then proceeds to glare at me. I mouth "i'm sorry". Feel like crap for confusing the poor guy.
anwyays... the question....
When high beams are on, but HBA is active (high beams sense light= turn off), is there a way to turn OFF high beams all together WITHOUT flashing your lights in any way?
I found in the High Beam section of the manual "• If the light switch is placed to the headlamp ON position, the High Beam Assist (HBA) will turn off and the low beam will be on continuously", but this would still flash your main lights since you have to cycle from AUTO to running lights to headlights.
thanks in advance

Having carefully read the G90 manual for this same function, I don't believe so

i ran into this issue last night! tried using my high beams for the first time ever (usually drive only in well lit city) and I couldnt get them to turn back to just auto. Very curious if this can be done without flashing them on/off

I believe OP is pulling the stalk toward him too far when disabling the HBA. There is a detent in the "normal," i.e., default position, and then it can be pulled further to flash high beams. Don't pull it all the way, just pull gently until it hits that default detent. They won't flash.

I appreciate the response. Correct me if i'm wrong though, but the stalk is spring return to center. When you first activate HBA, you push the stalk away, and it returns to center, leaving HBA on. The normal way to turn HBA off (that I had been using at least) was to push the stalk away again, which keeps hi beams on but deactivates HBA, then pushing the stalk a third time cycles the system back to OFF (hi beams off/HBA off). PULLING the stalk from the center position in any mode seems to turn manual high beams on.

Unless you are saying i'm missing a position between return-to-center and manual high beam (pull).

How is setting headlights to Auto different than using the stalk. I keep mine on Auto and it is occasionally on high beams in town. I have not had a backroads night drive when I was watching the operation closely.

I was confused by HBA when I used it at first too. Basically, 1 push for HBA, 2 for "stay on". If you want to go back to normal, you need to push it to "stay on" and then pull back. It's a tad stupid, but HBA is so sensitive that it's probably easier to keep it on and not bother trying to go back to "normal."

Thanks- Pg 178 goes over pretty much every situation EXCEPT • If the light switch is pulled towards you when the high beam is OFF by the High Beam Assist (HBA), the low beam will be X and the High Beam Assist (HBA) will turn X. I think I understand your method though. Will attempt tomorrow AM.

Sorry if not clear- i meant setting to Auto using the small slider on the left stalk. That controls light for OFF/AUTO/RUNNING/HEADLIGHTS. The movement of the actual stalk is what I was playing with to control High Beams and HBA.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It's a tad stupid that it plays by a different set of rule in that situation, but I could see how the designers probably thought "if its already using low beam, why would someone think to turn off the auto high beam?"

I just experimented with this on the way home today. You're correct, and you are not missing anything. Turning them off from HBA requires an extra/unnecessary step. Confusing.

Just closing the loop- did some testing this morning I can confirm you are correct. It seems the easiest way to turn hi beams off when HBA has them automatically off due to sensing light, is to quickly PUSH the stalk to turn them on manually, and then PULL the stalk to turn them off. I know it sounds silly that I want to turn them off manually if they have automatically turned off, but with the twisty dark roads I drive, they do a lot of on/off/on/off/on/off every time the car in front of me disappears around a corner and it ends up annoying my OCD side.
You guys are awesome though- thanks for talking me through it.(y)

I experienced the same confusion with the auto hi beams. The high beam has to be on for you to manually turn it off.

I just wait until no one is around to turn HBA off. Stupid setup, the auto wipers are poorly thought out as well. If auto is on but you just want a quick swipe you have to go up past the off position and then back to auto or change the level of auto back and forth.

A simple button on both stalks would have been a better idea. Push for auto on, push again to turn off.
