  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My local paper announced today that 27,500 cars will be recalled (2009-2012) for brake problems. THey say that Hyundai will come to your house and take the car away and leave you a loaner, then return it. Makes it sound the cars are unsafe to drive. We are to be notified by mail in November bu.it you can call your dealer and get it done sooner (LOL). Now here's where I'm bemused. It says 69,000 cars have been sold and about 60% have already been repaired through a company service campaign begun in March. I bought my car after its lease ran out in May and it was never mentioned.

The original TSB for the brake fluid change to DOT-4 was supposed to be performed on all cars brought in for service to a Hyundai dealer for any reason. That does not include buying a car at the end of your lease term, unless you had it serviced at some point by the dealer. If you did have it serviced, then it is possible they changed the brake fluid without you knowing about it. You can log onto www.hmaservice.com and find out what TSB's have been applied, and which ones are still outstanding on your car.

Apparently, the problem with the brakes is that the ABS (anti-lock braking system) module will develop intermittent problems over time that can cause loss of braking function (and not just loss of ABS function). Even though that is serious, I personally would not worry about driving the car to the dealer myself to get the service done, assuming I have never experienced the intermittent brake loss problem.

Interestingly, even though the TSB for changing the brake fluid was issued in March 2013, Hyundai made a production line change to DOT-4 in April 2012, so that only cars built after that build date are affected by the TSB/recall.

My car has only 22,000 miles so has never been to the Dealer.I tried calling Service today to find out exactly what was going to be done in the recall and schedule an appointment. Their way of handling my call was
1. Keep me on hold for ten minutes then told me someone would call back (LOL)
2. After 3 hours I called again and after another eternity was cut off

3. Called again, finally got a very rude guy who would not tell me what the fix was, and they would not do any repairs until I received a letter in November

Jenkins Hyundai, Ocala, FL. is my dealer.

Under the original TSB already in effect, you are entitled to have the brake fluid changed to DOT-4. Just make an appointment with your dealer to have any outstanding TSB's done, and don't ask so many questions.

I asked one question- are they replacing the ABS module or just the fluid.
1-2-3-4-5-6-.................

does this mean that the 2013's are not subject to this problem?

So I guess this means my 2011 4.6 is effected.

Hyundai is only changing the brake fluid in their recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into the problem, which might lead to further actions (or might not).

Note that the dealers have probably not seen the recall yet, but they know about the existing TSB which upgrades brake fluid to DOT-4. So just ask them about existing TSB's that are outstanding on your car and you can get it done right now.

They are not subject to the brake fluid change to DOT-4, since Hyundai made the manufacturing line change to DOT-4 in April 2012 (exact date posted in another thread). Whether or not the ABS module is inherently faulty will be determined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
