Mountain bike in trunk?

I searched all over the internet and cannot find the answer. Unfortunately, the back seats don't go down so that is not an option. Has anyone taken off the front wheel to their bike and pushed the front fork of the bike through the pass through area and able to fit the bike in the trunk? I know it fits in the back seats with the front wheel off, but that will eventually lead to scratching something up in the back seats or leaving a dirt trail.

I've heard that the Genesis is not a good fit for bike racks, and honestly I don't want to bother with a rack. I have an SUV and its so easy to just pop the trunk and throw the bike in!

It will probably fit with both wheels removed.

My road bike fits with both wheels off (60cm)
I just remove the rear wheel and replace it with an old hub, to keep the chain in place.

Since mountain bike bars are wider than road bike bars, you might have a problem with fitting the frame in.

You could always get a Thule roof rack with a fork mount bike carrier. It will only set you back $650. A Trailer hitch bike carrier is another option.
Whatever you do, don't buy one of those carriers that rests on your trunk, and is held in place with straps. You'll end up with permanent round scuffs in your paint job.

DG. I wish the solution was that easy..haha. I'm most likely getting rid of the SUV as its starting to fall apart. Would be nice to keep it for the winters, the bike and other odd jobs. I'm a single guy and only owned one car at a time..so not sure its feasible or worth spending the money to fix it up and continue paying insurance on it.


Bill - I definitely don't want the trunk rack. Don't want to scratch it up nor do I want to deal with nuisance of putting it on and taking it off. Not looking to spend more $$ on a roof rack than what the bike cost! lol
Was hoping to avoid taking rear wheel off..always get grease all over my hands taking it off and putting it back on - which I want to avoid before I start a bike ride.

If anyone gets the chance...try sticking the fork through the pass through and see if the back wheel can stay on. I'd be very appreciative.

Slipping the fork past the opening will not work. Ive tried that before and it would be much easier with my mountain bike (i have a Lefty front strut). When I travel long distance to ride i just remove both wheels and use an old rear hub to keep the chain tight. Bike fits just fine in the trunk. I also have a suv for occasions, and also use a SeaSucker rack. For what its worth, i've cruised at over 90mph with the SeaSucker on my rear glass. Thats an option for you if all else fails.
