  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Have a new 2012 Genny, 3.8L V6... has about 1200 miles on it now and is, for me, broken in fine. On highway trips to Tucson and back, this past weekend, we have been averaging 32 mph (65mph (adaptive cruse set to 67 mph) 4-lane to I-10, then cruise set at 78 mph to Tucson w/ adaptive cruise, about 85 miles one way trip from home). Elevation of Tucson is 2300' and elevation where we start is about 4640'. So it's a general downhill to Tucson, then uphill back. Going there, both times this past weekend, we got more than 37 mph. Return trips put us at 27.something mpg. It averages out to 32 mph or so. Do you also see better-than-expected or better-than-EPA fuel economy? This car is simply (for lack of a better word) great. :D

Downhill definitely helps! Here in the flatland, I've noticed that on highways it's more of a wind thing: with me and I'm over 30 in the V8, against me as low as 23.
Enjoy!

we drove back from New Orleans on our 2010 v8, we average around 26 going there and 28 coming back. On the way back we tested driving using mid grade (89) gas. At one point we got around 30. So it is good to know that the v6 can get that good of a milage. Do you have the K&N filter in it?

Not yet. I bought one off Amazon.com (new in box) and even though it was labeled as a 33-2427, and the rubber of the filter was stamped/embossed with "33-2427" it was the correct filter for the V6 Sedan. Apparently I got the coupe air filter. I sent it back and will get the correct filter.

I have an 09 3.8 with the Tech package with 31,250miles. Ive never seen below 23 mpg and ive been over 30 mpg several times. This car gets great mpgs. I love it.

The EPA has changed their calcuations, and many cars get better mileage than the EPA ratings, espcially when cruising at about 65-70 MPH. This is partly due to the very efficient Genesis transmission, which has several over-drive gears, and top gear is quite tall.

Here is a quote from a Consumers Reports article that discusses this:

"While the new overall mileage ratings are closer to the results of our real-world testing, there are still discrepancies between the EPA’s lab-generated results and the mileage we got from driving the cars on roads. With the new system, our overall mileage is actually better than what the EPA predicts for some models."

Curious. I've got 750 miles on my new 2012 3.8. The car is great but, with 2 fillups I have noted only 17 MPG in mostly city driving. Is this normal for break-in or should I contact the dealer?

City MPG sucks on Genesis. Also, engine not broken in yet, so should improve. Don't baby the engine, as this just prevents the piston rings from seating properly. Switching to full synthetic at frist or second oil change will also help.

From what I've been able to deduce, Hyundai the OEM oil load is synthetic...or is it not?

According to someone who looked at the 2012 owner's manual and posted in another thread, there is no mention of synthetic blend oil for oil changes on the 2012 Genesis, so it is unlikely that the factory fill is synthetic blend. It makes more sense to use conventional oil for factory fill and then switch to synthetic blend (or full synthentic) later rather than the reverse.

I personally would highly recommend full synthetic for GDI engines like the 2012 Genesis V6. Gasoline Direct Injection engines are somewhat prone to to fuel dilution in the oil, and synthetic helps prevent any adverse effects if that happens.

I have had 32 MPG on the highway numerous times. Calculated by the vehicle computer and by my re-fill calculations. I have noticed the vehicle's avg MPG to be almost spot on, on highway trips, but definitely overstated in the city. My city mileage is horrible. Maybe 17 or so.

2012 model V6 with 3K on it.

I have the 2012 v6. Live in a rural area. A bit hilly and a few stops to and from work, but no prolonged stops at lights.

Every tank seems to average about 19.5 mpg, regardless of how hard I drive it. I check it manually at each fill-up.

The computer shows I'm getting about 21.1 mpg, but the computer is wrong.

I think I need to air it out a bit on a 4 lane highway.
