So, I figured with the hiccups I had today, it'd be a good time to make a short sort of review post.
My car: 2009 4.6L with Tech Package. Black on black/brown interior. Bought with 75k miles, currently 101K miles.
Things I can say I'm satisfied with:
-375 horsepower in my daily driver.
-TONS of interior space. I always cart people around, and am about to have a kid, so the interior space is just amazing. Especially considering the other family vehicle is my wife's Chevy Volt which definitely does NOT have much leg room.
-While a bit sluggish, the transmission holds it's own and is made by ZF so I'm quite confident in it's ability to last.
-Options for the price. I paid about $14,500.00 April of 2016 for a fully loaded 2009 V8 luxury-ish sedan with tons of options. I can't complain about that.
The common issues I've run into thus far:
-I stupidly did not test the sunroof on my test drive(it was cold and somewhat late). Found the next day that it plan did not work right at all. Stripped gears it sounded like. It took a lot of fighting with the Ford dealer I bought it from, but did let them know I had the right to return the car and void the sale. Not sure how deep into my trade-in they were, but they would not accept that option. So with 2 weeks driving a base model Fusion loaner, they ordered a brand new sunroof assembly and replaced it all free of charge. They weren't happy about it, but it is what it is.
-July 2017 the well-known valve spring issue arose. I had a valve spring snap which allowed the valve to drop into the cylinder, bending, snapping the valve head off, and scoring the cylinder wall. This is not an engine you can simple hone/sleeve and fix. This resulted in a new engine. I paid about $2500 shipped for a used 2011 4.6L with 60k miles on it from LKQ. The car was down for about 8 months because of other obligations and financial situations.
-Shortly after I bought it, I did notice that the heated seat works well, but the cooled seat function didn't work very well at all, and got worse with age. From checking the forums, this appears to be caused by the low quality foam used in the seat bottom, causing it to degrade very fast and not allowing air flow.
-From day 1, the CD/DVD function did not work. I've price the unit out, and even if I bought a used one for about $350, it's just not worth it to me. Every function of the infotainment system functions as needed and I use other methods to play my music. I have been inside the dash though, so if the day comes when I want to replace it, I at least know it's about a 10-20 minute job at most which is nice.
-Just today I began experiencing tilt wheel issues. Now, It appears to be intermittent, so I don't think it's a module or motor issue, but a limit switch issue. Limit switches seem fairly cheap online ($20-100 depending on where from), and they also appear to be easy to access/replace. Today's "get me by" fix was to fiddle with the adjustment until it started working, get it set where I like, and turn off steering wheel easy access. For now, that's what I'll keep it at, as again, other important obligations have my money and more importantly my time tied up for quite some time.
-Finish on the wheels was coming off from the day I bought it. This I find pretty unacceptable. Cosmetic or not, I've never had a car this bad about the finish on the wheels. Not sure what Hyundai did differently, but there's no good excuse for such shoddy work on a car in the segment they're trying to compete in.
Minor annoyances:
- Every once in a while, cruise acts up. I will turn cruise on, click the set button, the set indicator light will light for a split second then go out. Turning cruise off and back on again resolves this.
-Very seldom, but sometimes, when turning the car on, "AFLS OFF" light flashes. Turning the car off and waiting a few seconds, then back on again resolves this every time. I have searched high and low for this on the forums and no one seems to have had a solid definitive answer on the actual cause of this issue.
-Once in a while, the parking sensors will act up, going off for no reason. Every single car I've ever owned or driven with parking sensors has done this. I assume it is simply a dirty sensor.
-High pitched clicking noise on load/unload seemingly from rear of car. In my experience with cars, a noise that shows up when you hit the gas or let off the gas would probably be a U-joint but this is very high pitched rather than your usual clunk. I'll have to look deeper into it, try to find any loose or worn parts associated with the driveshaft or differential/axles.
Overall, I'm happy. Aside from needing an engine replaced because of a major engine flaw(which locked my engine up and stalled it out while driving, which I don't see how that was NOT a safety recall), the rest I can chalk up to wear. It's now 9 years old, over 100k miles, and was a first year model. Add in that it was Hyundai trying to dip into a segment that notoriously has issues to begin with(think late 90's to late 00's Audi and Mercedes electrical issues). When even the "big dogs" in the segment have been plagued with many "common" issues across multiple year runs, I can't complain about the minor issues this car has had in it's introductory model year. All but the engine and cooled seat have been related to electronics.
If I did it all over again, I'd hunt a little harder for a 2011 to avoid the major engine issue, but overall, the car really has been great. AC blows cold, Heat works great, has plenty of comfort features for it's age, and coming from building faster cars every once in a while, it is nice to have a well rounded daily driver that also has a bit of power. Fuel economy is fantastic. I average 17-18 in city rush hour stop and go traffic to and from work every day and easily hit 25-30mpg on road trips. You just can't complain about that.
