  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My lease us up next March for my 2008 Volvo S80 T6 and am really considering a Genesis. I just purchased a 2011 Sonata limited and I am very impressed with the ride and quality of the car and figured the Genesis would be a great replacement next year. While at the showroom during the purchase of my sonata I spent some time in the genesis and was very impressed with the look and feel of the car inside and out!!! The 4.6 with the tech package is thousands less than my S80 T6 so I am figuring to get more for my money and save money on the family car!! BUT I see a lot of mixed reviews on this site and the most common complaint is the vibration!! Just want some honest opinions.

I don't think vibration is a problem at all. The Genesis is probably the quietest car I have ever owned. The early cars suffer from some ride issues over certain road surfaces, but the 2010 cars had a number of changes to the suspension tuning that appears to have improved this to acceptable levels. The ride is definitely on the firm side but coming from an S80 that shouldn't put you off. Try one and judge for yourself, but take it over a variety of road surfaces, not just smooth pavement. I guarantee you will be impressed. :)

Vibration? Hmm I haven't seen even a hint of vibration with my V8 with Tech Package. The engine does seem to be a lot smoother from 4000rpm up to redline though, but I honestly believe this is the variable valve timing trying to optimize for torque at lower RPMs. The sound of the V8 engine at higher RPMs is intoxicating.

I think it has been overstated on this forum about startup vibration... When the engine is cold you will feel a little vibration upon startup. Go to the dealer and ask to take a test drive and you will see.

To me it isn't a big deal or even a "deal" at all. The car runs like a hot knife through budda. Smooooooth!

Hmmm it hasn't been that cold in Texas since I bought the Genesis, so I haven't seen that yet.

I highly recommend the car. This site is not a true representation of the car. There are alot of the same people making the same complaints over and over again. Many Genesis owners do not ever visit this site, so make your choice using a well rounded opinion from many sites and reports on this car.

Your test drives: make sure you drive it on many different road conditions, bumpy, smooth, fast and slow. Inspect the car that you intend to buy with a fine tooth comb. Check every working aspect of the car and ensure the interior leather etc. are in unflawed condition. Test all items like Nav, Bluetooth, backup camera and Sound system etc.

In conclusion this car is a fine peice of machinery which is a great value for your dollar. When you drive off the dealerships lot you will be extremely proud of your purchase and feel like a more of a classy person. The stares you get from others when you drive this car are amasing.

You guys are great thanks so much!! I really can't wait!!!

This.

There have been "vibration" issues with the Tau V8 in this circumstance:

If you start the engine and drive it only a short distance before the engine has a chance to warm up, and shut the engine off, and then restart the car later (anytime), then the Tau V8 engine may exhibit some rather unpleasant "vibrations" at start up, apparently because the valves (or some others engine components) may have been left in the wrong position. The problem seems to occur during cold weather and may not even occur at all in warm climates or if the car is parked in a garage overnight (but not sure about that). The exact same problem has been observed by a member on a Kia model with the same Tau V8 engine.

I don't know if the problem has already been fixed on new Tau V8 engines, or will be fixed by the time you purchase next year. If I had V8, I would definitely use a synthetic motor oil to see if that helped prevent the problem. But if you don't stop the engine before the engine warms up (especially in cold weather), you should not have a problem anyway.

Regarding this forum, I think that people who post regularly tend to be more pro-Hyundai and pro-Genesis than the general population of owners (despite what is claimed above). Some of the forum members are Hyundai or dealer employees. That being said, I have not had any problems whatsoever with my Genesis V6 except for my concerns about some moderate 2009 suspension jitteryness (on certain roads) that has been fixed on the 2010 models.

I wrote about comparing the Genesis to the S80 when car shopping. Before the Genesis we owned half a dozen Volvos...S60, XC70's and a XC90. The Genesis is a step up in luxury and power.

Volvo had a slightly better balanced suspension. It was firm without being harsh and damped well. The Genesis is a bit harsher and doesn't damp as fast. Having said that, in most driving the Genesis works very well and it is quieter.

Thank you very much!! Exactly what I needed a Volvo owner that actually has both cars!!!

While not a exact comparison, I have a Volvo V70 T5 and the differences between my new Genesis 3.8 and the Volvo are significant. Its handling, turning radius, rear seating room, ride and road noise are far better than my Volvo. Also, I would guess that one would get better mileage with the Genesis as the Volvo 6 was never that great on gas. Cost aside, the Genesis is a better made car and this is apparent when driving at speed on rough pavement. In fairness, the front wheel drive Volvo would likely be better in snow.
