  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I found two myterious tapes on each side of my car. I believe they are transparent. Should I or should I not remove them? See picture.

Do not remove. The 3M tape is put there on purpose to protect the body from debris flying from the front wheels.

I think over time the Pearl colored Genesis turn a yellow tinge. Saw pictures on this forum of it.... I have a feeling it was from or cause from going to automatic car washes.

My film supplier says that the yellowing is from the sun over time. Much more noticable on a white car vs. any other color.

Like mentioned, this is a protective tape. If you have a white car and it yellows, you can replace it.

Mine won't stay put. It started to peel on both sides so I returned the vehicle to the dealer. They didn't want to mess with it (I think they were afraid in trying to remove it, they'd pull the paint off) and took my car to a local body shop.

They replaced the protective film on both sides (I looked a little rough, but not enough to get worked up over).

Then both sides started to peel off --- again. I took it back again, but couldn't leave my car there because I didn't have a ride and I was too early for the shuttle. I have an appointment to go back April 2. The service guy said they've had to have the body shop just use protective paint instead of the decal. I don't really care as long as a) it doesn't look awful and b) whatever the solution is actually does protect that area.

I don't know that you'd want to try and pull it off without a hair dryer or something to warm up the adhesive. Even then it might pull the paint off and I doubt you'd want that.

Is the Hyundai applied film different from the after market 3M protective film?

The tape is for shippping.

That is incorrect. The tape is to protect a potentially high chip area. I have had many cars in the past with it. The first time I recall seeing this tape used was in 1985, on the Porsche 944, in the same area. It is a common treatment on higher end cars to protect the lower panels...especially those with wide fender swells, low to the ground and curved rocker panels. Rocks and other debris gets thrown from the front tires (and other cars) and impacts the flared fender and rocker and causes chips. The clear protective tape keeps the paint from chipping.

P.S. I know of no equivalent paint protection. You can buy the tape yourself and cut and apply it. It is also sold in precut sheets for various cars to protect front bumpers and lights.

Here is a forum thread discussing replacing the film on Porsches, including the consequences of removing the film and not replacing it.

I would say not to removed the tape. It's probably used to protect the area of your vehicle.

If it were used for rock protection it would extend all the way to the wheel well. My car doesnt' have the tape. Apparently on some cars the tape is falling off. On other cars the tape is turning color. Is a rock supposed to hit the wheel and then do a 270 degree turn into the side panel? I don't think so. Leave your tape alone if you have it and then if it becomes a pain in the ass, or changes color-- remove it. Apparently your dealer forgot to remove it or thought he was doing you a favor by leaving it on.

Its protective tape, I've had it on other cars in the past. You should not remove it imo, and don't be alarmed if, years from now, it starts to yellow or get a bit or grime on the edges. You can clean it up, or replace it with new, but its there to protect the paint. How useful it actually is, who knows.

Sayantsi--

You are correct. I was wrong--
