I am new to this forum and thinking very seriously about getting a 2011 Genisys 4.6 with Technology Package. I am coming from a BMW 535xi, with my lease ending this month.

I am confused about the differences in the Premium 8" Navigation system that comes with the 4.6 with Technology Package vs. the 7" Navigation system on the 3.8. Are they both touchscreens or is the 8" knob only? I have seen conflicting information on this. Coming from the BMW, I am used to the knob, but I would think the touchscreen is nice to have.

Also, if I have read the posts correctly...it seems like there are much more complaints on the Premium 8" system over the 7". Correct?

Since, I got you....would you go with the 4.6 over the 3.8? A fully load 3.8 is barely cheaper than the 4.6, especially if you are leasing.

Thanks,

Thanks,

The Tech Package is Knob Only - No touchscreen - My Touchscreen gets fingerprints on my Lexus GS350, so No touching has advantages.

I was in the same position as you, and I bought the 2011 4.6 - A 3.8 with Tech Package probably would be hard to find and would not make that much sense, because as you say "It is barley Cheaper".

So far no one has reported any problems with the Tech Package on a 2011. Maybe they've got the bugs out by now.

I've owned both a 2009 and a 2011 4.6. The systm with a knob are not touchscreen. I put almost 3000 miles on a 3.8 with touchscreen. I prefer the knob.

There are probably more of the 8" screens, but they do seem to have a significant percentage of the problems reported on this forum.

Thanks,

I went with the 4.6 twice. My boss started with a 3.8 and up-traded to the 4.6

If you are buying a 2011 4.6, they all now come with the knob as the Tech pkg is now standard.

Welcome aboard! I also came from the BMW family and ended up with the 4.6 with tech package.

Thanks,

Coming from the BMW with iDrive, it was a very easy transition. (Although I had the previous generation iDrive from my 2006 E60) I really am not fond of touchscreens as they are annoying to keep clean, and I am so used to inputing information via the DIS, or iDrive. I went with the 4.6 after driving both the 3.8 and 4.6 and then seeing the small price difference. If you have not already go out and drive both, and as mentioned if you are looking at the 2011 4.6, the DIS is standard.

However, you will not be admitted to the club officially until you learn to spell "Genesis":D

I have a 2010 4.6 with Tech package and have not had any DIS Nav problems. I do wish it had voice calling out street names yet that is not a biggy with me.

I've got an 09 4.6 with the Tech Pkg and have had no issues with it. Go with the 4.6 - you won't be disappointed. I've owned over 40 cars (many of Germany's best) and this is the best car I've ever owned.

Voice command is easiest way to get nav routing and to use blue tooth phone link. We don't have to use the knob much.

Thanks,

Don't forget that the tech package includes a LOT more stuff, e.g. the 5.1 17-speaker Lexicon system, the driver's side ventilated seat, the adaptive headlights, etc.

I suspect the reason few people talk about the touchscreen system here is that it's rare. One of the nice things about the Genesis compared to a German car is that the gizmos are extremely affordable, so why not get the fully loaded car, especially if you're leasing? (If you were buying... well, let's just say I wouldn't like to pay for a Lexicon 5.1 amp, which is known to fail, or a DIS head unit out of warranty.)

(For the record, I'd be inclined to vote 3.8 instead of 4.6, but I've never driven a 4.6. The 3.8's city fuel economy scares me enough, and the 3.8 has more than ample power...)

I have a 2010 with touchscreen and like using it. I have never owned a car with a control knob, so don't know if I'd like that better. The touchscreen does, of course, show fingerprints.

The 3.8 engine is plenty powerful for me. I'd say go with either engine and you will be happy.

I have the 4.6 Tech. The knob is great. Probably safer too in that you dont need to reach. Also, get the 4.6, the power just rocks

I like the touchscreen (based on test-drives) because it is easier to see what letters/numbers drop off as you enter an address. However, after three weeks with an '11 4.6, I think the shuttle-and-button control combination is excellent. More so daily. Storing addresses, adding names to entries, etc. takes some practice--but it did on TomTom and Garmin, too. The shuttle's very agile in managing the remarkable--no, make that phenomenal--music capabilities of the audio system as well as the GPS and phone, also with some study. I'm sure you'll be tickled pink if you end up with either car, but I certainly wouldn't shy away from the shuttle dial.

The big engine is a total zippity-do-dah, ever-loving blue-eyed hoot, by the way. I just know that my next car will be all-electric. Really.

In order to get the touch screen nav, you will need to: a) get the 3.8; and b) forgo the tech package. I'm also shopping for a Genesis, and I've driven both the 3.8 and 4.6 several times and tested the function of both navigation systems. While I like touch screen navs, I will not buy a Genesis with the touch screen because the car will come with the 14 speaker audio system which is nowhere close in quality to the 17 speaker system that comes with the tech package/non-touch nav.

Regarding the 3.8 and the 4.6, do not assume that the 4.6 is superior. I would recommend taking them on back-to-back test drives. I wanted to like the 4.6 because I wanted the massive power, but I preferred the way the 3.8 drove. The 3.8 felt noticeably more agile, exhibited less body roll, and still had plenty of power. It also gets better gas mileage and runs on regular fuel. I also prefer the 3.8's full leather steering wheel to the 4.6's partial wood grain wheel.

Consumer Reports recently tested the 4.6 and stated, "The optional V8 brings little to the table over the excellent V6 model." CR's performance figures reflect that the 4.6 was 0-60 in 6.2 v the 3.8's 6.3 seconds. But the 3.8 was .10 seconds faster to 30mph (2.4 v 2.5). The 3.8 weight distribution is 52/48 vs. the 4.6's 53/47, and the 3.8 is several hundred pounds lighter.

Interestingly, CR tested the 3.8 against comparably priced "upscale sedans." The 3.8 was ranked highest in that class of about 20 cars. The 4.6 was tested in the "luxury sedan" group (5 series, E Class, etc), and was the least expensive of about 20 vehicles tested in that group. It ranked #3, one spot above the Mercedes S Class and several spots above the 5 series, E Class, and A6.

Minor correction: Both the 4.6 and 3.8 run on regular fuel.

True, but premium is of no benefit for the 3.8. If I owned a 4.6, I'd feel compelled to use premium to get the extra 10 horses.
