New Genesis Enthusiast Looking To Hear From Owners

Hello Everyone!

A bit of background: I have leased luxury vehicles for most of my life. Have leased Acura, Cadillac, and currently, Lincoln.

Slowly, I have been putting money away to actually buy my first luxury vehicle. The plan was to buy my dream BMW, but after much research, they are an extremely unreliable brand. I don't need to buy a luxury vehicle and spend most of its ownership throwing money into repairs.

About a year ago, friends started whispering the word "Genesis" into my ears. These were the up-and-coming vehicles to look out for taking on the big luxury names.

The GV80 was a car I was most interested in but not happy about the fact that it was "too much" vehicle for me. I don't need such a huge, heavy vehicle.

However, with the introduction of GV70, I am really excited. THIS is a vehicle that really gets me excited.

The only thing I am disappointed about in Genesis is their total lack of hybrid vehicles. My Lincoln is a hybrid and I just love the gas mileage I am getting. I am hoping (but not anticipating) that by 2022 when my current Lincoln lease is up, Genesis will announce a hybrid GV70.

Anyhow...

From what I read, Genesis's vehicle is rated extremely high for dependability. If I am going to sink $70k+ in a vehicle I want it to last for 200,000 miles.

I would love to hear from owners as to how you are enjoying (or not) your ownership of Genesis.

I won't be able to purchase until March of 2022 which is a good thing, as these vehicles will only get better in the meantime.

Nobody can really say anything for long-term reliability because the GV70 won't be out for months, and it'll be years before anyone gets to 200K miles with it. It uses brand new powertrains from the GV80 and new G80, which nobody has yet to even receive. The jury is still out on long-term reliability for these particular vehicles, and we can't generalize it based on the current models on older platforms using older powertrains and tech.

If you want a vehicle guaranteed to last 20 years or 200K miles, buy a Lexus GX or LX. They're dated as hell, but there's a reason they are the primary choice of vehicle for traveling across the harshness of middle eastern deserts.

Also, Genesis says they won't be having any hybrids and are skipping straight to EV's. There's a good chance there will be an electric GV70 in the future, but a hybrid is very unlikely unless it's a mild one with a 48V battery.

Looks like hybrid is going to be an interim technology as electric gets more range and charging stations pop up. For the typical commute, EV is just fine. Long trips, not so much yet.

It takes years to develop a new car from scratch. If you can get an EV to have a day's driving range, hotels of the future will have charging stations so you can fill up. Already some restaurants and rest stop have them so you can have lunch and add 100 miles or so.

Cost and ROI is still a concern but getting better. If I had two cars, I'd consider and EV based on my limited driving experience with one. Acceleration is fantastic. Climate control in heat was great, no experience with cold.

For your other question, I'm on my fifth Hyundai/Genesis vehicle and have been very pleased though the most miles was about 65k, not 200.

Depreciation has improved since the launch of the brand and generally is better than for the Germans (esp. once the warranty period expires).

Think the GV80 and GV70 will take depreciation to a whole new level, much like how the Telluride has done for Kia (where used Tellurides are going for MSRP) due to demand outpacing supply.

If what you want is a luxury vehicle that lasts forever, there is not a single other one that comes close.

It is unfortunate that the GX is the only vehicle out there that can fit your criteria, but the market for new luxury vehicles that last forever has disappeared, as every new car comes with a mountain of electronic gizmos and advanced force induction engines that won't have as long of a lifespan.

I asked about holding its value as another option is to sell the vehicle and upgrade to another in a few short years of ownership. Which leads me to my next point...

Leasing

Genesis offers some attractive lease deals but from what it looks like not on "loaded" vehicles. Usually base models.

I wonder if Genesis could make leasing their vehicles an affordable, attractive option for those wanting the top-tier trim.

Genesis is no different that any other seller. Offer an attractive price to get you in the showroom. Oh, you want tires? No, battery not included but for a few dollars more we will put it in. Everything is negotiable. The better dealers will offer KY to make the process easier though. Read the fine print.

Generally, BMW and Mercedes are the ones that offer the best lease deals in the luxury market.

Infiniti also was aggressive in this area, but under the new regime, seems to have backed off a bit as Infiniti wasn't making much $$ on such lease deals.

It remains to be seen how depreciation ends up for the GV80 and GV70, but wouldn't be surprised if it's something along the lines of the Telluride (supply not being able to keep up with demand).

I also think motel/hotels are gradually installing charging stations and that will help when traveling. BUT I witnessed a guy almost get his butt whipped after demanding some dudes move to another parking spot so he could use the charger for his Leaf. Police even came, He did not get to charge. Police agreed with people already parked. Spots are first come first serve, no special circumstances because of type of car. Strange world out there.

I have seen some marked "for charging only" but unlike handicapped, not sure how it would hold up legally. There has been many instances of a-holes intentionally blocking them in places. Usually with a big jacked up pickup.
