  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My GF got a kenwood head unit- http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113DNX892/Kenwood-Excelon-DNX892.html?tp=20212

she had it installed by a shop, they ran a USB extension from the back of the unit to the glove box... but they never extended the A/V outputs, or the HDMI outputs... pretty lame..

so now if i want to connect anything to that, i have to pull the entire unit out to access it... she spent A LOT of money, and they did a half ass job.

apart from that, my only real complaint with the system is that volume buttons are just that... buttons :X i would have preferred a control knob to adjust volume, like the stock head unit, but i was not with her when she picked it out, and to be honest, not sure i would have gave it much thought prior to install anyway...

neither of us use the steering wheel volume controls, so yeah, the buttons are a bit of a hassle... anyways..

the main reason I'm posting this... she wants to "mirror" her phone to the head unit, and she bought the necessary cable (did not come with head unit) to do it, but for android, you have to plug into the HDMI port, so now i have to take it all apart... while I'm in there, i plan to run HDMI extensions, and A/V extensions, so i can plug things into the unit in the future, without tearing the entire dash apart... I plan to run these wires to the bottom where the USB, aux and iphone ports are, you know where the little hatch door is??

have not checked yet, but if there is extra room there, I'll drill holes, and form fit the HDMI port there, so it looks factory installed...

the question i have is.. can i switch the USB out?? i guess that USB is used for the old factory head unit??? and/or to charge your phone... can i switch that out and put my new head units USB there, rather then the hokey doke shit they did at the shop, having the USB come out of the glove box....

i suppose if i cant "change it out" i can just remove that USB port all together, and put mine in.... leave the old one in the back with no purpose... but, just wondering if anyone has done this?? or know if it can be done?? have any recommendations, etc.

ahhh, one more thing... the car came with a factory satellite radio tuner/antenna... but when they installed the head unit, they never connected that, and they are telling me i have to buy an external satellite tuner, if i want to use my xm radio... I think that's bullshit, but I'm not sure... does anyone know if its possible to use the factory tuner, if so how???

sorry post is so long, i have a bad habit of that!! :p sorry sorry!! thanks for any help tho.

ps: if anyone has any questions about this head unit, feel free to ask too!! I'll answer the best i can.
