Hello everyone,

First time posting here, but been reading the posts pretty frequently.

I'm saving money right now and really REALLY tempted to get the 2.0T coupe as my first car. However, Chevy's coming out with their new....CAMARO!

Given the costs are about the same, except the camaro gets a v6 engine, fuel efficiency is almost identical...what one should I get and why? Any advice is welcomed. Thx!
 
That is an excellent question as both are great vehicles. I'm glad you have to make this decision instead of me. Personally I would be leaning toward the Camaro.

I saw the new Camaro at the auto show last week. In my opinion the Camaro is a much nicer looking car. For as long as I can remember all of the US auto companies have been trying to go bankrupt. If you believe the US government is going to prop up General Motors no matter what then go for the Camaro. I am basing this solely on looks. If you get the Camaro you must get red.

I don't think Chapter 11 bankruptcy (reorganization) will have any affect on the availability of GM cars or warranty service. Every major airline in the US has gone bankrupt at least once except for AA and South West. Only a very few (like Eestern) went out of business.

I don't think the government will allow GM to go into Chapter 7 bankruptcy (liquidation).
 
If only I could afford both I would. I heard the problem with the Camaro is that it's too typical american. Everything's screwed together decently, but the little things fail (i.e. ergonomics). I've read some ppl's reviews and they've all commented about how the seats were just too SUV like and doesnt' support anything. I called a dealer today and I'm gonna test drive it soon as it goes on the lot. I'll update later
 
I wouldn't get the camaro because who gets a camaro in a v6? I was always a chevy guy growing up but the warranty suck major a**. I had an s10 and as soon as the warranty was gone I started having problems. I got the Genesis coupe fully loaded for 32,000 I dont know about the camaro and its features. Test drive them both
 
I would go for the camaro as well but as someone above mentioned I would prefer the V8

My silly opinion...take it for what it is worth.

One of my pet peeves is when I see someone driving a sports car with a 4cyl. when a bigger better motor is available.

I remember back in high school a girl got a brand new camero ss....BUT come to find out it was the SS trim package and not the all out V8 motor to go with it. Since that day, I tend to snicker at all those who purchase the American Icon Mustang with a little measly 4cyl or v6. To me, it just defeats the whole purpose of buying a sports car.

Remember...this is only my opinion! First...save up a little more and get the 3.8 Coupe or 2.0 Turbo (if you plan to mod.) or save a little bit more and get the V8 Camero. That is what I would do but to each his own. And please, just ignore my giggles when I pass you by. :)

I guess that you can't grab a '04 - 06 GTO up in Canada, 'cause that's what I did 18 mts. ago. Government Motors didn't sell them in the great white north due to crash testing or some such BS. However, they were (are) still a steal in the USA, came with a 400 HP LS2 (05-06) and where often sold new for well under $30K (US$) for most of '07 and '08 until unsold stock was gone. GM made very little effort to sell them fast, IMHO. Mine was purchased for $26K new.

The stock V6 on the Camaro has over 300HP, more than all it's competitors by a healthy margin. It's hardly a slouch and I think the V8 is unnecessary unless you "live your life one quarter mile at a time".

As for the Camaro vs. the Genesis they are totally different. The Camaro is a very long and big typical American coupe with a V6 and V8 where the Genesis is a smaller and differently proportioned more typically Asian track coupe with a 4-Cyli and V6. Personally with this car I'd go for the 2.0T.

Your preferences will win out in the end.

I owned a v6 mustang for several years, and let me tell you I yearned for the v8 every day I drove it. It's nice to have a cool looking car but when stock imports can dominate you it defeats the point of driving a muscle car.

The stock V6 on the Camaro has over 300HP, more than all it's competitors by a healthy margin. It's hardly a slouch and I think the V8 is unnecessary unless you "live your life one quarter mile at a time".

Would you really want a little Korean car blowing you out of the water? The Genesis 3.8 would dominate the v6 Camaro with lighter weight / more HP. If you love the Camaro for being "American Muscle" that just isn't going to sit well.
 
I test drove the auto 2.0T fully loaded and to be honest with you the engine felt JUST enough to keep up with the car. THe car itself felt pretty heavy (and it is a heavy car). The turbo looses its power once you go past about 5000rpm, although in real life driving I woudln't go that high anyway.

The autobox in manual mode changes gears by itsel f@ redline, and it takes forever for a downshift (it doens't match the revs or anything), so not too overly impressed.

I called a dealer a little while back and they havn't gotten back to me about the camaro. No wonder GM's dying, such lousy service!

For regular people I think a 300HP V6 would be plenty, not everyone that drives a Mustang or Camaro is a drag racer. Remember the days not too long ago when there was a 215HP V8 Mustang GT and people are complaining about a V6 that has 80+ more HP? The whole HP and torque wars have become rather silly in regards to what people expect.

I got the 2.0T and love it so HP numbers were not my concern either. I'm simply making the point that if a person buys a car because it is a muscle car, that person is not going to be happy that a little equally priced import has more power than you. However that is not going to hold true for every car buyer.

Fun is definitely linked to feel. The Mazda Miata is enormously popular despite not being particularly fast, just because it handles so well.

On the other hand, some 1960s cars had tremendous power. The 'next to no HP' came in the 1970s as exhaust flow restrictions to scrub emissions seriously sapped power. In 1972 the way horsepower was measured also changed, so a car rated at 400 horsepower in 1971 would be rated at roughly 320 in 1972.

You wouldn't find many 1960s muscle cars that can run an honest 5 second 0-60 mph, but almost anything with a muscle car label would outrun a modern 4 cylinder family sedan.
