  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Good evening,

I was recently in need of a commuter car for work. Long story short, I stumbled across this 2011 3.8 Genesis sedan with 113k and enjoyed the vehicle. Picked it up for a fair price (5200) and it runs quiet and strong.. (but) it has a pretty nasty chatter for about 3s on a cold start.Assumed it’s the chain tensioners, I’ve put 5 thousand miles on the vehicle and haven’t hadn’t any issues! I actually really enjoy this ride and 25 mpg isn’t terrible considering I’m coming from the 1/2 ton truck world..I changed the oil when I got home from the auction with penzoil 5w20 and will every 3-5k after!
My main question, should I be worried about the startup chattering for longevity? Are there maintenance tips for keeping the vehicle running? Finally do you run into any trouble with local shops working on suspension and not putting cheap aftermarket parts on?
Any tips help thanks! Sorry for the long post!

So is it a tick or clanky noise? If it's a tick it's most likely the high pressure fuel pumps.

Switch to a thicker motor oil. I recently discovered this myself. I switched over to a 5w-30. Adding a oil catch can will help your valves out alot. These direct injection engines gunk up valves. I would throw a fresh set of plugs in also.

I had the same chatter in my 2009 v8 as well. I purchased it preowned with 12K miles in 2011. After about 100k miles, I started hearing the same and was worried. Eventually, it got worse, but it took quite a few years. I think if you stay on top of the maintenance, you will probably be OK. Mine JUST died the other day with 306k miles on it. The car still runs, but has drive chain, cat converter issues. But never gave me a problem in the 12 years I owned the car. After 306k miles, I'm sold on Genesis products.

It’s a clankity noise more than a tick! Motor is quiet after 3 sec

306K miles, you might have a record with a Genesis for endurance.
