  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2" scratch in the windshield of my under 2-week old Genesis. Wouldn't be a big deal if it weren't absolute dead center of my vision. I've confirmed that a new windshield is covered by insurance but I'm reluctant with the techie features of the windshield, e.g. rain sensors, and I fear a replacement will be a downgrade. I dropped by a glass repair place today and they think they can buff it out with tools but it 'may' leave a distortion and since it's dead center it would be noticeable. I'm going to contact State Farm again and ask if I can try that route out and only do a full replacement if distortion is in fact the result.

I know a few of you have had your glass replaced and it seems like it went okay but with the car being so new it makes me nervous. Any advice on repair attempt vs. replacement would be greatly appreciated.

Replace it. $40K car with a scratch that you see when driving- not worth it. I had mine replaced- no biggie. Too bad it wasn't in direct sight, or i would wait til it got a bit more pitted.

No problems whatsoever with my new PPG glass for my Tau Tech.

Interested in what you opt to do. I have a rock "ding" on driver side down low, and it annoys me. no doubt! Can those usually be buffed ut??

I think buffing is only an option with a scratch. If it's a crack or 'bullseye' then it's a different type of repair. I had a bullseye repaired a few years back on my previous car and it looked okay. Still noticeable, but improved. Of course that was not in my direct line of sight so it didn't bother me.

In my home state, Florida, windshield "dings" are 100% covered by insurance, and do not count against your insurance claim record (its a state law or regulation).

If that's true in your state, have Hyundai replace it for you. (It should cost only about X what a glass specialty shop would charge - probably less than $1K (vs. $200 or so at a glass shop).

Depending on how bad the scratch is, it can probably be buffed out using a cerium oxide slurry and a felt wheel. If it can be done this way to your satisfaction, it would be preferable to replacing the glass. The potential for leaks rapidly escalates when the old glass is cut out and the new one installed. Check with a glass shop that specializes in mirror work as they have to polish out scratches all the time and make the repair optically clear. Good luck.

My experience with replacing the glass in my wife's Lexus LS430 was that the car was never as quiet when the glass was replaced. I would try to get it buffed out if possible.

Anyone else think that the aerodynamics of the Genesis seems to have more rocks dirt hit the windshield than normal?

I had a Sebring Sedan for 10 years before I bought the Genesis and only had a couple occasions where I heard rocks etc hitting the windshield, but in the month I've had the Genesis I've had 4 or 5 instances where I cringe listening to the pebbles hitting my car being kicked up by a truck.

I'd get it buffed out if it's just a scratch. If it is actually cracked that's a different story. Have never had good luck with repairs on cracks, just comes right back.

I just had mine replaced, $700 for a new one, rain sensor and Soundmaster make it more than a normal windshield.

I picked up a rock thrown from the back of a truck coming into Atlanta last June. In Ga, your deductable applies. Since I was on the beginning leg of my trip, when I go to my sister's house in Mo, we called a mobile windshield repair company. He would not fix it since the pit had two legs and he was not sure it would take. We thought we could fix it in Denver. My sister called her son who found out that there were no windshields for the Genesis in Denver and it would take $600.00 to replace. We declined. When we finally got home back in South Ga, I went to a windshield company who again declined to do a Mobile repair. They quoted me $500.00 installed for a new windshield with the rain sensing option and tint. After one return to adjust the wipers correctly, I am a happy camper again.

Have a better one for you ! On thursday night we had one hell of a storm on the Eastern seaboard ! I took a branch through my sunroof and discovered it 3 or 4 hours later! Serious water damage! my baby is in the Hospital (Body shop) and I have no prognosis. To make it worse Enterprise gives me a Buick Lucerne. (old man's couch riding car) What a rotten weekend waiting to see the extent of the damage!

I'm still staring at the scratch. Pretty lame on my part given that I can get the windshield replaced for free. I'm more concerned about ride quality issues so the scratch has been a pretty low priority. I will most likely get the windshield replaced in the next few weeks since I'm considering trading the car.

This really stinks! Talk about adding insult to injury - first a natural disaster and then a Buick - I hope your insurance steps up. (Also hope your floor mats dry out :D)

The new mats I bought from you were in the trunk! I had just swapped out the original oem mats with the rubber genesis mats earlier in the day for the fall and winter...

Well, some small consolation anyway. Good luck on the repairs!
