If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Just picked up my Genesis last monday. Map Version 02 03 03 2008/04/26/08Still learning the DIS. One thing that is not working, is when I go to the screen that shows:

1. Speed,
2. Longitude and Latitude
3. Altitude

Everything works except the Altitude. It mostly reads 0 feet but once in a while, it reads 200 feet. Never anything else.

Will soon make an appointment to have this looked after, perhaps getting the DIS updated per Service Campaign T-63, TSB 08-01-019. The GPS Speed (I have a speedometer <grin>) and the GPS Longitude and Latitude are not important to me, however because I often drive long distances, the GPS Altitude reading is very important to me.

While there, I will get the door locks set by dealer so that all doors unlock with one push of the button. I'm seldom able to unlock all the doors with two pushes of the button. One push is better.

ctrcbob,

You bring up a good point, or at least a question from me.

Does anybody's info screen show altitude in anything other than 100 foot increments?

I haven't had the DIS update yet, so I wonder if that will change with the update. The manual shows screens with "819" feet (or whatever), where mine only shows 100, 200, 300, etc.

So what does yours show?

Mine hasn't moved off zero, before or after T-63. Good to check the digital speed vs. the speedo. My speedo is off 3-4MPH above 75. [the speedo reads high]

Ric,

Your car speedo is always going to read slightly higher than the GPS speed. Car manufactures have to make it like that, otherwise, people would get too many speeding tickets if their true speed was more than what the speedo shows.

Glad that you guys told me that your altitude readings are like mine. Now I'm not sure if I will just wait to make sure I get the latest update, not the 04/26/08 version again.

When I spoke with the Genesis Team in California just before I bought the car, they told me that the newest version was just released on January 1st.
Wonder if dealers know this.

It is also done for warranty purposes. A speedo that reads 4% fast also increases miles "driven" by 4%. Accordingly, a 36,000 mile warranty is reduced by nearly 1500 miles. Makes a difference when multiplied by hundreds of thousands of vehicles.

An aside to this issue, but why doesn't the Altitude and speed overlay on top of the actual map, like it does in most other nav systems?

You're gonna have to explain that better for us old guys. Analog speedo vs. digital odometer? Even an analog odometer is precise over a measured mile.

YERP....mine too.

Driving with cruise set at 85mph, GPS says 82mph. I quesitoned that and brought in my Garmin NUVI 200. Set cruise at 85mph, (2) GPS units read 82mph. Good to know! My Camry is off 6 MPH!!!

Also, the altimeter is useless to me, but with that said, it has never moved up or down from 500 ft.

Ok ,guys, I have looked at my GPS very carefully many times and I don't see my speed any where. I have had a passenger look while I drove and he didn't see the speed either. Where do you guys see the speed on your GPS?

I have a portable GPS from another car and yes it has the speed but not my Genesis.

I have never thought about altitude since Most of the state is about five feet above sea level.

I forget the name of the seperate screen that shows the speed, but it is the same screen that shows the longitude and latitude. (Darn complicated screens!!!)

If you still can't find it, tomorrow I will write down how to get to the screen and will tell you in this thread. (this is one of the few things I know how to do - darn complicated screens and DIS)

Ah, so it's not on the map screen. Now that I know that I can probably find it.

The portable GPS that I have the speed appears right on the map.

Thanks

I have a correct altitude reading

ctrcbob,

I haven't had the DIS update yet, so I wonder if that will change with the update. The manual shows screens with "819" feet (or whatever), where mine only shows 100, 200, 300, etc.

So what does yours show?

After reading this post I checked my satellite information page on the DIS today. It was reading 700ft. Checking online the local elevation for Charlotte NC is 751ft and for Concord NC is 704ft above see level. So I guess my DIS is reading correctly. It is definitely not reading zero.

BTW as far as I know there has been no software update to my Genesis yet. It did receive one complimentary oil change at the dealer, but no software update was done at that time.

Altitude??? Damn....I've not gotten fast enough to get the wheels off the ground! Guess I should have bought a V8!!! And where's the button that causes the wings to spread out???

Not necessarily. If you own a motorcycle you know what I speak of. For instance, I have a Suzuki Burgman. It, like most motorcycles, has a speedo that is 10% off (10% high). When my speedo reads 60 mph I'm only doing 50 mph. There are entire discussions on the motorcycle boards and forums as to the reason for this, and I won't delve into that here. BUT even though my SPEEDO is 10% off, my ODOMETER is CORRECT. This I have checked many times by GPS. That is because ODO and speedo readings are taken from different sources. I would expect the same thing in new(er) car. At least that's my understanding of modern speedo and odo readings.

Now, with my GENNY, I have GPS NAV in the car and have a Garmin. IN all cases, when I'm on I-10 and my speedo in the car reads 80 mph, my Garmin agrees at 80 mph. The distances also jive with the GPS. For what its worth.

I thought I read it here, but how do I get to the screen that displays elevation? I was there a few times and can't remember how I got there....must be old age. I prefer my Garmin anyways, but that's life.

thx,

My recollection:
hit the basic NAVI Menu button on the DIS (not the map display button - the center button on the right switch bank)
Use the DIS knob to select Settings
Then select NAVI Information

Thanks, that sounds about right. But that's pretty convoluted just to access altitude/elevation info when my Garmin displays it right next to my map display. Just one more thing that makes me like the Garmin more. I cannot figure out why Hyundai just didn't go for the look and feel or just license Garmin for the in-dash unit...m gosh it would be so simpler. I'd LOVE to have the satellite overlay info like my smartphone.....oh well....
