  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey folks,

I'm an electronic hobbyist, and my son asked me to build him something for his Genesis.

In a nutshell, he wants to display the current RPM on a string of LEDs...no big deal....

I got an OBD2 module that can "read" some parameters and "spit" them out in a way that my micro-controller can understand.

I don't know much about the OBD2 protocol, but from what I could understand, every parameter is "standardised" with a specific parameter number. It's up to each manufacturer to select which parameter (or not) are going to be available. RPM seem to be among the "de facto" mandatory ones.

As I said, so far, so good !

The next request was to display in which gear the transmission is !!!!

That is (in theory) Parameter ID (PID) number 164.

Is there a way/place where one can validate if that parameter is indeed "published" over the OBD2 protocol for a Genesis ?

If so, does it apply for a manual transmission ?

I doubt it is available. My "B" plan is to create a formula that will take in account the current RPM vs current Speed and "estimate" the current gear, but that would be flaky in terms of reliability.

Anyone ever did something similar ?

Now, the "C" plan for my ...."B" plan is to create some kind of plate, with contact-less sensor, that would be placed in the compartment (not sure about the right english word) where the stick shift is, to pick up the actual position of that stick shift. Again, has anyone ever done something similar ?
