  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Odd sound, have you heard it too?

I recently picked up a 2015 AWD w/Tech and ever since a dealer visit it has made the sound in this video:

I'm wondering, is this normal? Doesn't happen every time, I'd estimate roughly 20-30% of the time when I arrive home. It happens other places but much less frequently. I'm still tracking the sound to try to tie together when and why it happens.

I would greatly appreciate your feedback to know if your vehicle has ever done this.

More details:
I'd really like to know if it's a common thing or it's just my car. Since due to a completely bungled repair job of the unbalanced wheels/tires that came from the factory, I ended up reviewing my dash cam footage and found the dealership's techs shifted my car into drive or reverse (whichever was the other direction) without even coming close to a complete stop. They did this four times that I have on video. The first time was the worst, and that day was also the first time I noticed the noise you hear above.

I'm also curious to know if anyone else had unbalanced tires straight from the factory? One of mine was so bad they had to order a replacement tire.

The dealer called Hyundai's tech line and supposedly were told no damage can result from shifting between forward and reverse without stopping, which I think is complete BS without qualifying it with a speed. Or even a qualifying statement that it's fine because the transmission logic won't let you shift at speeds that will hurt it.

I pushed them for a new car but they seem to have finally fixed the balancing issue & addressed the myriad other problems I ran into. The only thing that's left is this transmission issue. Hyundai USA has it documented under a case #, but we both know if I end up having to sell the car a vehicle with a rebuilt transmission will be seen as a problem car and worth less.

If this noise is common and nothing to worry about, that would be great to know. If it's just me, then I've got some more work to do, but that's good to know too. If you were in my shoes, what would you do?

That sound is not the side mirrors folding. It is actually the electronic parking brake being set. I noticed it too and thought it odd but now I actually think it sounds cool.

I have noticed that the parking brake sets/unsets itself. It seems to always unset itself when you put the car in Drive or Reverse. The thing I can't figure out is what to do to set it automatically (I know it does so but not all the time).

Markpoisson is correct, it's definitely not the side mirrors as those fold every time and are very quiet in comparison to how loud this sound is.

The electronic parking brake should also be set every time, unless I modify it. Which I'm not. It happens frequently enough now that I wonder why it didn't happen between when I purchased the vehicle and its first service visit 9 days later.

The parking brake sets automatically if the car is turned off with Auto Hold switched on.

OK thank you, what I'm hearing seems to be that the noise is totally common and will happen 100% of the time if the auto-hold feature has been turned on. I thought I'd used the auto-hold feature prior to bringing it in the first time, but maybe not. Maybe I did but there are so many new sounds vs my 2012 that didn't have the tech package, that it took me a while just to get everything sorted out i.e. yes those vibrations are not supposed to be there, yes the multitude of beeps as I back out of my driveway are normal, etc.

In fact to even get a good recording I had to turn off the welcome sound (which activates on entry and exit) and for best effect, mute the stereo since it plays even after the ignition has been turned off. A feature which I normally like.

Next few times I drive I'll experiment with this, but I'll bet this is exactly it.

Thanks!

Yes, definitely the parking brake. I love the sound too. Sounds super cool and have even gotten comments from Mercedes and BMW friends who think it is a cool sound. One even said, "Crap, your car has a robotic break too?".
