  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I am dealing with yet another exhaust leak in my 2009 Genesis 3.8 and this time it is the front passenger flex pipe. Needs a replacement and the shop is quoting $650 for parts alone. I went online and found a OEM one from a Hyundai dealer for $415 but also an AP Eastern exhaust for $125 on RockAuto. I am not sure which one to go with.

The OEM one I believe is made of Stainless Steel, so supposedly will last for 10+ years. The AP one is Aluminized steel and based on the internet is only good for 3-5 years. My car already has over 110,000 miles and is also 13 years old at this point. Realistically, I see it with me for maximum of 5 years before the repair costs completely go over the car's value. So I am more inclined to go with the cheaper option right now.

However, if the cheaper AP exhaust is only gonna last me a couple of years, then I will have to repeat this process again. While the cost of the part itself still does not come close to OEM one, labor charges of $250 means one-time OEM + labor equals 2 AP + labor replacements.

Can anyone who has changed their OEM exhaust with AP Exhaust or any Aluminized Steel exhaust please tell me how long they usually last? I live in New Jersey, so some snow and road salt will be accelerating rust. I do however frequently get the undercarriage washed in the winter.

Any advise is appreciated. Thanks!

I think the price alone should tell you something.
Can you not just get the flex pipe replaced?

I think the leak is on the front pipe and not the flex, it was cut and welded back in May but seems to have cropped up again.

Yeah, the price gives me a pretty good idea... But aluminized steel pipes seem to be the most common aftermarket exhaust replacement. So I wanted to check the longevity of those before I give up and pull the trigger on OEM one.

WHEW! Im tardy for the party!
I am sorry you are going through this. In 2019 my driver's side flex needed to replaced as I think I hit something in the road (yes I was SLAMMED on coils). The STEALERSHIP wanted about that much if not more.
I used the trusty Ebay search and found one from a salvage yard for $90 shipping.
Jacked that car up, removed the old and installed the one from Ebay. No harm no foul!

Ebay and LKQ are GREAT resources for OEM replacement part. Trust.

Have a good day!
