Oil Filter Seating?

I've been changing my oil on 3.8 2015 Sedan for the last 60k. I have a persistent leak on the filter and overtightened two changes ago and ruined the housing and replaced it.

Does anyone know how you are supposed to get the new O Ring flush. It bubbles out so much more than the used one I've left on forever. Is it not supposed to be flush? I put the new one on and it stopped leaking but this is the gap (it stops at the O Ring). I can't imagine it was designed for it to stop there and I'm afraid to leave it like that. I'm using Wix 10033. Thoroughly confused and tired of dealing with this problem. I know I have it in the right slot.

My best guess it that you are putting the o-ring in the wrong place. (Especially if the o-ring is supposed to be showing in your picture. Done right, it can't be seen with the housing installed that far.) In the correct place, it will seal completely even a few turns before you have completely tightened the filter housing. The correct location is shown in yellow below.
You only tighten it enough so that it won't spin back off due to vibration. It does not have to be tight to seal. Also, always put oil on the new o-ring!
