oil usage with synthetic oil

2014 Genesis RSpec sedan with 45K miles. The car has never used more than 1/8 quart of oil between oil changes (5K mile intervals).
Historically I have used the Quaker State 5-20 oil but this last change at 40K I used Mobile synthetic 5-30. From 40K to 45K I have now used a quart of oil. Is this normal with either this viscosity or synthetic? I am tempted to go back to QS 5-20 oil.

Not normal. I have used Mobil 1 since 1999 in Toyotas and Hyundai Genesis, and never used any measureable oil between changes (although I have the V6 Genesis, not the V8). The 2012 R-Spec was known to use oil in some engines, but should have been fixed by 2014.

If you switch back to QS 5-20 and it still uses oil, head straight to the dealer. That may be cause to replace the engine under warranty. If the dealer does not cooperate, open a case with Hyundai Motor America.

Make sure your warranty does not run out before you get this addressed (in case you purchased used and it is not a CPO).
