  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Not quite. Yesterday I had the ding of low fuel warning and continued to drive. I watched the "miles to empty" message and I stopped for fuel at 14 miles estimated. No double-ding emergency warning. 14.6 gallons of fuel without trying to overfill into filler tube neck. Manual says 15.8 gallons for tank capacity. Did I have enough to go more than 14 miles? Should I wait for the double-ding.* How far could I have gone? What is the lowest you have gone before refueling?

*I should stop well before all this nonsense

I've gone down to 2 miles. But this was planned. Was emptying my car of 93 octane before filling up on E85. Wanted to get as much ethanol as possible.

Usually fill at about 1/4

Years ago I was low and figured I'd go to a station across the state line to save 20 cents/gallon. I coasted to a pump! A guy behind me said I should have pulled forward to the first pump. Nope, could not go another inch!

Is there a double-ding or some emergency warning for imminent fuel starvation? (thirst?)

I’ve not heard a double or immanent ding. Nav always tries to find me a station to fill up at. I’ve driven when the count down no longer shows miles to go at all. Still seemed like there was a gallon or so remaining. Most cars when the mile count down hits zero or low, you still have 10+ miles to find a station. Never ran out of fuel before but have never overly pushed it either. With either of my cars when the low light first comes on I check the odometer and go no more than 20 miles before filling up.

I typically gas up before 1/4, sometimes much sooner, but for sure long before the idiot light comes on. When you get down to 1 or 2 gals left in the tank, that little bit of fuel sloshes around and the pickup might starve of fuel when you accel/decel and take turns. That's bad for the low pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank, as well as the HPFP.

Unless it's absolutely necessary, I'd rather not tempt fate.

Just the initial warning to look for fuel. You'll get that warning each time you start the vehicle until you replenish fuel.

There's always an unusable amount of fuel in the tank, so don't go by that. I never let fuel go that low, but good to know you could theoretically go down to 2, and still be driving:). Also remember fuel cools the pump, so not good to let it run that low IMO.

This ^^^. I had the fuel pump in my minivan burn up and the mechanic told me that running the tank near empty can cause this.
