If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. After a brutal winter of flying rocks and road salt, I conclude the paint on this car is pretty much crap. I spent the entire day yesterday and a few hours this morning detailing my ride in the garage. Clay bar, mirror polish and wax. Luckily I had a clear bra on the front end because it would have been a mine field. I thought the hood was angled enough so rock damage would not be an issue and did not do the hood however that theory proved very wrong especially up here in snow country. Normally a hood is only done on the leading edge back maybe a foot but in this case then entire hood needs protection. I have at least 20-25 chips in the hood. Nothing major or very deep, just a bunch of little buggers. I have never seen this on any vehicle I have ever owned and can only conclude the paint chips far to easily. My 2010 and 2012 Genesis never had this issue. I am going to Dr Colorchip it as the small nicks are quite small and should easily vanish after treatment. Then I will have the entire hood covered with Expel Ultimate.

Bottom line is their paint sucks.

The paint may be the same quality however the shape of the car is different and the materials used on the roads could have been be different. Also did you drive somewhere during the winter that you never took your other cars? There are so many variables that the only way to be sure its the paint is to run a laboratory comparison.

Nothing has changed, I have been driving the same route for 22 years now. The shape of the car is actually the best I have had since the hood is almost flat or parallel to the road if you prefer. I actually have driven less this year because I have been using my pickup truck much more than I usually do. One good thing is the roof line has a glass panel which is deadly for rock chips so no paint whatsoever on the roof of this car, major bonus here. I have seen several posts about the poor paint quality or maybe I should say hardness or chipabilty for lack of a better word so I am not the first to complain.

BMW was kind of forced to change their paint a few years ago because of environmental challenges. The new paint is not nearly as resistant to damage as the old paint. I wonder if the same affected Hyundai?

This is likely just state of the market and everyone will be crappy for a while-- like the engines of the 70s, until the automakers figured out how to emissions without destroying power output.

I will change my initial quantity to hundreds of dings. Here is a picture of a small area as best as I could get it. Strange thing it is the hood only so maybe there is something defective in the paint on the hood. I will definitely get my dealer to look at it before making any corrections.

Several states in the U.S. mandate waterborne paint. No more solvent based stuff. Maybe this has something to do with it.

Turns out I just had my wife's new car done with Expel Ultimate. The guys installing said with the newer water based paints are not as chip proof as it used to be by far so yes you are probably right.

That being said I will withdraw my statement about the Genesis paint being bad, more like newer cars in general due to water based paints. Still sucks but now that I know, any new car I purchase will be wrapped on the entire front end including complete fenders and hood and roofline if applicable.

If any one is looking for the best clear bra material out there I have researched this to death and Expel Ultimate is the one to get. I strongly suggest you do or you will regret it in the short term unless you don't give a hoot.

Here is a video of the self healing properties of this stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6oEgfdwUU0

Here is a video of a guy who tests 19 different brands by shooting a pellet gun to imitate rock damage. Only 3 stand up to the test. http://www.tintdude.com/forum/index...-durability-of-ppf-3m-avery-kpmf-orafol-xpel/

Any pilots or flow experts out there?
Does the blunt nose of the Genesis and its rather large and very flat upper hood create a low pressure area over the mid to back portion of the hood that might be attracting debris to flow downward onto the hood and windshield rather than deflecting it up and over the roof?

Neither a flow expert nor a pilot, but I can tell you that this ain't moths to headlights. There's neither sufficient time, nor flow to make a difference. It's the paint.

If you live in a rock-chip prone area, use a film like Expel Ultimate.

It it is only the hood and not the fenders you may simply have a defective clear coat or paint on the hood. If so they should repaint it.

I double checked the fenders and although the horizontal portions are rather small there is damage there also so it's more than just the hood. Damage is minor and mostly in the first foot up front but still there.

I had a 2003 Nissan 350z that had the worst paint ever. I got a clearbra on it asap which saved me a lot of dings. I remember looking around at dealers and there was a silver one with less than 2000 miles for sale with about 30 small chips in the bumper which were obvious because it is black under the paint.

My 2008 Accord had a ton of chips in it in 6 years of use. So far I am pretty happy comparing my 2015 Genesis to those two cars.

All 3 cars were black, so far the Black on the Genesis is my favorite (you can also add in my wife's 2009 Buick Enclave) in that grouping.

I have owned my Genesis for almost 10 months now, so I am not a totally new owner.

I have 8,100 miles on mine and went through this harsh winter with lots of road salt (including getting sprayed by salt trucks going in the opposite direction and trying to salt the whole road - since when is that OK?). I also have taken several long trips and am happy to say I don't even have 1 paint chip yet (though do have a few nicks in the headlights). Maybe it's the paint job on your specific car?

Agreed. Vapor thin easy to chip paint. On my 2012 and my 2015. Insane. Over time may sour me and many others from this brand again. Korean paint bean counter and engineers should all be fired and banished from the ecosystem. The whole car needs film job. Regardless of the environmental whackos bully regulations, this paint is not up to par. How long will Expel Ultimate last before turning color or yellow? Want to have hold back dollars every month to pay for the expense to remove and put new on.

I've experienced the same thing, the paint is shit. My sonata seems to have better paint though.

Sonata made in US? Maybe localized engineers get it. Where those folk over the ocean who do the Genny do not get it yet? Just a thought.

I would have to assume hot places will last much less. That being said, I had the 3m el cheapo stuff put on 5 years ago on my wife's car and it still looks like the day we put it on. No clue how long the Expel Ultimate will last.

That is good to know. Appreciate the history. 5 years not bad at all for cheapo stuff. Like good tinted windows, might get 8+ years. Worth it for sure.

I had my 98 Honda accord windows done when new. My mom inherited the car and we finally brought it down to Florida for a car in the US. The tint only went bad last year and I have to assume because it sat outdoors in the searing sun for 5 years in Florida which is what killed it. Only the rear and 1 back side window. Basically it lasted 15 years and if it were not for the Florida sun I bet it would still be like new as are the other unaffected windows.

As for the clear bra on my wifes car, I assume it was el cheapo stuff because I bought the kit on ebay at the lowest price I could find and had it installed locally. Just last month her car replaced the aging Honda in Florida so I suspect the clear bra will slowly get eaten away however I did buy a full cover for the car so it may prevent damage, we'll see. Get back to you in 10 years. :D

Two things:

It would be helpful for anyone having a problem with paint to indicate color. Color has a significant effect on how paint behaves. I am not seeing any problem with Black. Blue is typically delicate; red fades more than other colors, etc. in general - not just with Hyundai.

I don't have any Xpel or anything else on my wife's car, but I know that Xpel (a Canadian company) has a product good enough that they are going head-to-head with 3M. So far, they are doing really well because their product is holding up very well. The only reason I know any of this is that I bought stock in the company.
