  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

The Parking Assistance System in my 2015 Genesis 5.0 Ultimate appears to have failed but HMA and the dealer disagree.

Whenever I pull up to a solid object, for example the wall in my garage or the concrete barrier in a parking garage, the front sensors do not annunciate. That is, there is no audio signal nor do the yellow/red lights illuminate on the screen. This is the case even when I pull up to within an inch of the barrier. The only way I can get the sensor to activate it to shift into reverse then back into drive. Then and only then will the sensors activate (both audio and visual).

My local dealer kept my vehicle for 10 day and finally returned it to me with the explanation that this is the way it is designed to operate. The dealer spoke with a Hyundai engineer who was at the dealership. They also spoke with their tech line support folks at HMA. Everyone agrees that this is the way the system is designed to operate. The idea they tell me is that Hyundai does not want the parking assistance system to operate while in traffic.

Does this make sense to anyone? It certainly does not make the least bit of sense to me. My wife's Lexus operates exactly the way I think it should. It annunciates while in drive anytime it is approaching a solid object - as in when the vehicle is pulled into the garage.

I'm very curious if anyone else has experienced this issue, has taken their vehicle in for service and how the matter was resolved.

I appreciate it.

Make sure the parking sensor button on your centre console is pressed/illuminated. If not then the sensors will only activate in reverse.

That is not the way mine operates when it is turned on. It beeps in Drive and Reverse when I get close to anything!

It should beep in drive or reverse as long as the switch in the console is turned on. The console switch remembers the setting. The best way to prove your point is to try the same thing with a vehicle on the lot.

It sounds to me like you do not have it activated. As noted above, check to make sure the light is illuminated on the switch on your console.

That is not the way mine operates. As long as the switch on the center console is on that is. The front sensors beep when parking in my garage and every morning when parking in the garage at work.

:eek:They kept the car for 10 days???

There are times I feel like a blithering idiot. This is one of them. Everyone's advice was spot on. The parking assist switch/light in the center console was OFF. Clearly a case of the nut behind the wheel - me.

I did some experimenting today. When it is turned off, it does indeed turn on (light next the center console switch illuminated) when the transmission is put into reverse. I also found that after turning on in this way that it goes off again (light next to the center console switch NOT illuminated) shortly after being put back in drive. However, when the system is turned on with the switch in the center console, it stays on and remains on even when the ignition is turned off then back on.

Problem solved. How simple. I'm still pissed at myself for not finding this in the manual. I try not to ask questions of the forum that can be found in the vehicle documents. I clearly missed it on this one!

Still perplexing however is that fact that the dealer told me that after speaking to the Hyundai engineer who was in their shop AND after speaking with the Hyundai tech line that what I was experiencing was "how the vehicle was designed". As this statement is JUST PLAIN WRONG, it's appearing that the dealer didn't have these conversations with Hyundai (either that or the factory folks don't know their own car) but rather took the path of least resistance to get me out the door.

And k9kids, I was wrong. They had the car for 17 days! I dropped the car off on 10/12 and picked it up on 10/29.

Many thanks to all who responded and helped me figure this mess out.

No such thing as a bad, wrong or stupid question on here. Just ask. That is what this forum is all about. For future reference, you on board computer also holds a copy of complete manual.

Regarding your comment about the deailer. They simply didn't know you were driving it without the switch on. They turned on the switch and tested it along with the HMA personell and it worked as manufactured. I wouldn't harp on them as they did investigate the issue. No?

But they needed to have his car for 17 days for that determination???

It probably took 17 days for the HMA engineer to arrive. :D

I've found HMA very responsive on any interactions I've had with them - The dealer experience - not so great... but I can live with it for the value it allows this car to be priced at.

Ditto ^

Which makes me wonder all the more if "the engineer" or HMA were ever contacted.

Now that I know the answer to the puzzle, I'm planning to stop back by the dealer again tomorrow and explore this further

Many times it's the obvious that's overlooked when trying to fix a problem.

Don't feel too bad....at least you didn't have it erroneously turned off and then try to "test" why it wasn't working by driving into your garage and then accidentally tap your workbench denting the front bumper cover. Figured out it helps to actually have the sensor switch on and working vice a $300 mistake.

I almost did exactly that backing up to my garage door. Barely got it stopped in time!

Note that there are other conditions that even when on, doesn't pick up the item. I parked at a Walmart one time and it was an end spot with a light pole. The front curb angled outward towards the passanger side curb and I didn't notice it. I drug the bottom of my front bumper across the top of the curb before it started beeping. I was pissed. Luckily it didn't affect the front surface, only the bottom surface which you cannot see but it still made me cringe when it happened.

I had the same problem, the bottom of mine is scuffed too....
