Parking sensors distance

Does anybody know what's the closest distance that the parking sensors are useful? BMW's for example do not work closer than 12 inches, which is absolutely useless, since I can park at that distance without using them.

The parking sensors, in my opinion, are not quite as good as the ones I have seen (heard) on BMW's. I've noticed in a 7-series that a friend has that the beeps are continuously variable, getting gradually closer together as you approach the obstacle, until you get the continuous tone. In the Genesis, the beep interval is incremental. In other words the time between beeps stays the same as you inch forward, then suddenly increasing to a shorter interval, then finally to the continuous tone. I've noticed that the tone does hit "continuous" at about 12 inches away from the obstacle.
