Performance Tires - they wear!

I had an eye openning experience to tires the other day. Unkown to me, my performance tires are shot. I have 20,000 miles on my Genesis V8 and low and behold the tires are worn. Is this true of all tires of this type. I am looking at $1,000 for new ones. Thanks!

Yes, performance tires generally wear faster than non-performance tires, all other things being equal. The softer rubber compounds on performance tires provide better braking and handling performance.

In addition to Mark888's comment keep in mind that individual driving style has a major impact on tread wear. Sometimes people don't think they are hard on tires when they actually are.

Look for a lower speed rated tire, they will last longer but your handling may not be as crisp

The most important number to look for is Treadwear. M&S or All season tires are your best bet. Performance tires are really for that, performance cars that are mostly for weekend racing and the like.

Yes and no. That number can be a bit misleading and here is why...

"The problem with UTQG Treadwear Grades is that they are open to some interpretation on the part of the tire manufacturer because they are assigned after the tire has only experienced a little treadwear as it runs the 7,200 miles. This means that the tire manufacturers need to extrapolate their raw wear data when they are assigning Treadwear Grades, and that their grades can to some extent reflect how conservative or optimistic their marketing department is. Typically, comparing the Treadwear Grades of tire lines within a single brand is somewhat helpful, while attempting to compare the grades between different brands is not as helpful."

So if you were to buy a new set of tires, which tire (specifically) for the V8 Genesis that currently has the low profile factory rims....need help here. What do you think I should be paying?

The most important number to look for is Treadwear. M&S or All season tires are your best bet. Performance tires are really for that, performance cars that are mostly for weekend racing and the like.

Treadwear is only so good - the number is manufacturer derived so the ratings can't be compared across brands.

Also, M&S and all seasons will never offer you the grip of summer, but what you give up in grip you gain in tread life. Considering the Genesis is not a sports car, all seasons and tourings are probably the most appropriate tires.

I just ordered a set of Pirelli PZero Nero All Seasons at $130 ea plus tax and shipping. I hope to get them on the car this week, and then I can let you know what I think.
