  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I recently purchased a 2012 Genesis V6 Sedan. While many of the features are great, the voice command function for retrieving names from my cell phones contacts -- all of which uploaded fine into the bluetooth/nav head unit -- is very sketchy.

Whatever the software is that Hyundai has loaded into this system, it seems to suffer major problems with fundamental name recognition. Regardless of how clearly I try to pronounce a name, it usually misses it by a mile.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with the Phone Voice Command function?

Absolutely! I've pretty much given up trying to use voice command in my 3 months of ownership. My success rate is maybe 1 in 10 tries.

No, I'm surprised to read of your difficulties. On both my '09 and '11 Genesis', I haven't had any trouble with voice command (VC) recognition. Even some names that are close (e.g. "call Dan" vs "call Dad") are handled correctly, almost always.

The only problem I've ever had with voice commands is when I'm not alone in the car, and the increased level of ambient noise from other passengers has caused the VC system to respond with "pardon?" But even that's rare.

I wouldn't think there's much variability from car to car given that this is largely firmware-controlled. Perhaps your microphone is blocked or dirty?

Very few problems with voice commands, so it does understand mine and my wifes southern accent.

Yup. :(

on my 09 I had no issues at all. It recognized most names and it was quick. on my 2012 its real slow to respond and it does not repeat the values (city, address) back to me. not sure if thats a setting or not.

Its a setting in my 2011.

I have a 2011 and have been surprised how accurate it's been. The only time it's failed to recognize a name from the address book was an occassion when I forgot I hadn't added that name yet. As has been suggested, maybe the microphone has a defect. Or, possibly something is different in the 2012s, but it seems unlikely.

"Beings" I am from NJ, my system responds with, "Yo, you talkin to me?" We understand each other just fine.

2013 R-Spec worked well for a while, then got very confused, missing names by miles.
I dumped the contacts (Phone Directory) and reloaded them.
After that it has worked very well.

Mine works pretty much 100%. I use it all the time. I cannot remember the last time it got a contact wrong.

Biggest complaint with my R-spec is the nav/phone system. Very slow to respond. My default phone does not always connect. Not too user friendly. Hate to say it by my cheap company car and my aftermarket Alpine are more user friendly and accurate.

No issues on my 13 rspec - I've never had it make a mistake - I'm sure I've jinxed it now....

My 2009 was perfect. My 2012 is a disaster. 100% error rate using voice commands for phone. Nav is a little better. Obviously, something has changed..

At a glance, it looks like people are on one of two extremes: works great or doesn't work at all. The issues do not seem to have any strong correlation with model year. So, I wonder if there is a module or wiring fault at play. Like, what if the mic connection is poor, or there is some issue with the VR module.

No real issues here, just found I need to speak clear and slow"...
I watched the YouTube instruction videos, Nav/Cruise/Radio/Phone:-
all working ok. the speed of the unit is far superior to previous VW RNS 510..

Mine works fine if I use a Korean accent. Actually I find that less is better. Never say the last name and shorten the first. Instead of Thomas say Tom. Instead of Rodrick say Rod.
