  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So after a ton of research and driving a lot of cars. I decided on the Genesis R spec. Never thought I would own a Hyundai nor did I know they made a car of this caliber. I was at CarMax and he showed me a Equus. I was super impressed with the car but wanted more performance. This is my wifes car but I will be driving it for the next 3 months (until our Cadillac XTS lease is up.) I am a huge car guy and have been for 35 years. This car has totally impressed me and (I have a 521 cubic inch Ford Torino) that runs low 11's so I know what quick is. This is one impressive car.
NOW, let the mods begin. First order of business is mufflers (it lets a little growl to it) and intake. Time to research!!!

Oil leak (blow-by past rings) in early 2012 R-spec's - determined to be faulty rings. In the event your Genny has the problem it should be covered by warranty. You can check the thread mentioned above to find the date of manufacture cut-off. I have a late '12 and have had no problems whatever - oil or otherwise.

Mufflers - do some research on this site before committing to aftermarket pipes. Some owners who have made the switch report excessive resonance with certain brands.

The R-spec is a great car. Enjoy!

I have a 12' R spec. It's awesome. No oil loss. No problems.

Don't let some jerk make you feel like you made a bad choice. You did good.

I love my 2012 rspec. Easily the nicest car Ive ever owned. More bang for your buck, with great styling. Im glad I havent experienced the oil consumption issue. From what I heard its more rare than most people think. Its a blast to drive and I get compliments all the time. I slapped an intake on mine and it sounds nothing short of greatness. Next is borla exhaust with quad tips!

Just purchase a warranty with it you'll be fine! Good luck and welcome. The Genesis is hands down the best bang for your buck in the luxury segment.

I have the vin off the car and have not paid for it yet. If I have the VIN is there a way to tell when it was manufactured? I am suppose to pick it up tomorrow. I am half way thru that oil consumption thread (that is long as hell!) The CarFax shows clean and shows trips to the dealers for normal oil changes (nothing excessive.) I bought a 2012 Duramax that was brand new that started using oil. Don't really want to go thru that but it seems like this is a limited thing. I personally am excited. It took a lot of work to talk the wife out of another boring SUV and to buy something fun to drive!!!

Google "hyundai genesis vin decoder" and go through the returned list of sites until you find one that gives the information you need. Alternatively, you could just call the dealer and ask to have one of their lot boys read the date from the door piller.

New twist to this story. Found out it had a new short block assembly installed at 29k miles. It has 39k on it now. Crap don't know what to do know. Either I buy it being relived the problem is fixed or keep looking.

^^ I suggest relieved. Half a new engine at 29k. Not a bad deal. Assuming the engine looks all buttoned up well, no leaks, rest of car is good, you have either CPO (2022 and 100k) or used warranty (2017 and 60k). Likely they may even support warranty to 129k for motor.

I agree with DRS...

Otherwise - I'm surprised that, as a car guy, you didn't know about the Genesis and what it is/represents. Have you sat in a new one? It kinda makes the Cadillac XTS seem a little ridiculous. :p

From what I know, the oil consumption issue stems from a bad batch of European piston rings that was discovered fairly soon in the production run of the new 2012 5.0 engines. I believe that if you have a build date, or engine build date after March of 2012, a good chance of no problems.

I have a June 1st build date and never burned a drop.

Hyundai Genesis guy. A reply to your somewhat smart ass answer. We drive an XTS because a buddy of mine got me a lease with ZERO down and 272 a month on a 13k mile a year lease. That is a 54k sticker car for 272 bucks a month (can you beat that??) And how can you be surprised I didn't know about the Genesis. I always see you guys talking about how "nobody knows what it is" comments. Personally I always thought Hyundai was a cheap ass car and didn't know they had a vehicle of this caliber. I would have never paid any attention to Hyundai had I not seen this car on a lot. And yes I have sat in a 15' but don't want to spend 50k on one when I can get a used one for 30k and let the original owner take that 20k hit!

Griff the car was sold in January of 12' so it is forsure an early one! Staying clear of it and going for a newer one.

My message wasn't intended to be taken in a negative light. I've been a "Cadillac enthusiast" all my life. I think the XTS was (since it's going away) a good DeVille/DTS replacement - especially with the twin turbo V6 and all wheel drive. However, it's really not much when you put it up against a second generation Genesis - which is why I brought up the 2015...

How did you get such a good deal on the XTS?

I hear you with the whole badging thing. A lot of people don't realize the Genesis is a "Hyundai". And sadly enough, some people lose interest as soon as they hear that it is. They're ignorant. But, yes - I do "assume" that all "car guys" are up to speed on the kind of accomplishments Hyundai has made with cars like the Genesis and Equus. I also realize that's not always a fair assumption.

In a way - this is actually a good thing. People like yourself - who had no idea how good Hyundai has become - will soon find out and perhaps buy one...

You might try to find a good 2014 left over. Thats what I did. I had a 2011 before and already knew I wanted another Genesis. So I went looking and found a couple of 2014 left overs. Worked hard on the deal and got a new $48k+ sticker car for $36k. Very good deals can be had if you look around.

Exactly how I got my 2013. It was a left over that I purchased in April of 2014. Didn't work very hard on the deal and got a $44k vehicle for ~$33k with all of 16 miles on the odometer. And this was before the Gen 2s were out. Deals on Gen 1 are pretty sweet.

I am looking at a 13' now with 17k for 31$$ but thanks for the heads up I am still looking. I am blown away by this car.
I got a hook up on the XTS from a buddy that is a general manager of one of the dealerships around me. The XTS was a service vehicle that had 3800 miles on it. GM was giving some big incentives so after all was said and done we walked out with a brand new IPAD and a car with zero down and a cheap payment. He cant get that deal now as the incentives are gone so that what started me looking. I am for sure going to buy an Gene. I think it will be fun to whoop up on someone then when the ask what it is tell them you just got beat by a Hyundai.

I have a 70 Ford Torino GT with a 521 cubic inch big block. I took off all the badging except Ford in one small location. Its fun to see people stare at the car and they have no idea what it is. I would think these cars get the same strange stare!!!!!

You might also look around for some of the 14MY golf cars. Hyundai had a sponsorship for golf events in which they supplied a ton of 2014 R-Specs. These ended up at dealers with less than 1,000 miles on them and they are fully loaded. In fact, since they never have been titled, you become the first owner and they are CPO with full warranty. The few I've seen on the internet are running about $34k.

I don't know where you live, but a SoCal dealer near San Diego (Poway I think) had a 2014 left over R-Spec which was fully loaded in white, for about $36k. less than 50 miles on it.

This is my second Genesis sedan. I had a 2011 4.6L fully optioned and now I have the 2014 R-Spec. Really a great car and the 5.0L is just flat out fast!

Thanks man I am looking up that dealer right now
