  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

at a local shop near me there was a m3 that had a piggybacked Aem infinity that activated after a certain mph would this harm the 5.0 r spec engine?

Nice idea.... BUT... That would require AEM to have figured out the performance envelope of TAU 5.0 as well as detailed understanding of how the ECU is programmed, to be able to support the 5.0 r-spec!

Needless to say many have tried to crack the 5.0 ECU without any success thus far, but one can only continue to hope...

Also AEMs' current support is very vehicle specific, example:

I don't know enough about this aem unit but most piggy backs don't need to know the precise inner working of the ecu. They just tap into injectors, throttle body and other areas and replace or alter the ecu's signals (often as voltages).

Ok :o, perhaps these are some clues to the OP question that can be found on the AEM web site, example:

WARNING:
This installation is not for the tuning novice! Use this system with EXTREME caution! The AEM Infinity Programmable EMS allows for total flexibility in engine tuning. Misuse or improper tuning of this product can destroy your engine! If you are not well versed in engine dynamics and the tuning of engine management systems DO NOT attempt the installation. Refer the installation to an AEM-trained tuning shop or call 800-423-0046 for technical assistance.

NOTE: All supplied AEM calibrations, Wizards and other tuning information are offered as potential starting points only. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ENGINE TUNER TO ULTIMATELY CONFIRM IF THE CALIBRATION IS SAFE FOR ITS INTENDED USE. AEM holds no responsibility for any engine damage that results from the misuse or mistuning of this product!

Yes, this is correct. Piggy-backs just manipulate the input signals from various sensors before they reach the ECU in order to "trick" the ECU into producing an altered output back to the device that sensor is monitoring.

I installed something very similar to this on my Elantra Touring, which was not officially supported by any piggy-back manufacturer. Granted, I only messed around with the AFR, which can still be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing, but a piggy-back will technically work with almost any modern electronically controlled vehicle.

To David's point, I would be hesitant to try this device on a GDI V8 with no prior knowledge of the limits of each variable on this particular motor. Common knowledge that works on a MPI vehicle (e.g. AFR = 13.0 for max power) would grenade a Tau.

That's essentially the same warning you would get from any tuning solution whether its a piggy back or a ecu reflash. I've used piggy backs before and they are a valid solution if you're a capable tuner or can get it to a shop that has worked with AEM before. I've never used one on this car so maybe there are some caveats I'm not aware of but there isn't anything special going on with our cars.

Yeah this is a situation where you need an experienced tuner and likely go for a mid or mild tune rather than something aggressive unless you have someone who really knows what they are doing. It's certainly doable! I ran a Dynojet CMD piggyback on my Genesis Coupe for some time.

really interested in trying this but i wont b able to afford it til feb. so if anyone wants to give it a try til than its well worth an idea. im sure someone with great experience with v8 tuning should have no problem at making a piggyback mod for the tao engine.

A tuner who knows how to tune with a knock detector shouldn't have problems. Find the limit and dial it back a notch.

It is a free country, so anyone who is willing play Russian roulette with their beloved R-Spec, while kissing that 10/100k miles warranty goodbye in the process, is most welcome to try this idea!

For now, I find thirteen grand for a new engine is just a tad too rich for my taste...

Yeah I'm not in a position to risk it either but someone will eventually do it.

The key is reliable datalogging, as it is in any realm of tuning on any car. With the appropriate sensors in place, a piggyback is a reasonable venture. That said, it's very limited as to what you can achieve when you're fighting a system built with so many "nanny" gadgets in place.

I'd pass on attempting to eek out a couple of HP via this method, and I modify everything, and have tuned piggybacks and ECU replacements. (not true standalones)

aems answser to the piggy back plug and play was to basically join their forum and if theres enough interest they will make a harness for the piggyback but i personally havnt seen the aem infinity piggy back in motion to speak for the product.
