  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey guys,

Hopeful future G70 owner here. I’m about to go check out a 22 launch edition. It’s under 20k miles, at a great price (selling for similar or even below normal SPs at that mileage). This is not a Hyundai or genesis dealership. The previous owner blacked out all the trim, which I don’t necessarily love and may be contributing to the low price - but it means I don’t have to worry about the dark chrome fading! Unclear if there were any performance mods.

So my question is what main issues should I look for to ensure this car is in good condition? I am aware that the matte paint is high maintenance and the red seats have some creasing issues, though I don’t know all the details. Please fill me in on anything I should look out for to avoid a lemon!

Thanks in advance.

I don't know the specifics of the G70, but I do recommend that you check the VIN with a Genesis dealer to make sure that the remainder of the factory warranty is still valid. (Sometimes people get caught doing modifications that cause Genesis to invalidate the warranty.)

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Check the coupling between the transmission and engine to see if there is any oil coming out. The odd car has had that issue.

Try cruise out and make sure there isn't an issue with phantom detections - Collision avoidance will come on and brake. It's not common but has been seen on a few cars.

If you want to find out if it was tuned, there are a few potential clues.
  • Pull a plug and see if they are stock (NGK) vs Denso or HKS (used for tuning)
  • Check the retainer clips by the ECU to see if the area has scratches from someone removing them - same with the passenger side for a JB4 piggyback.
  • Check the ECU or TCU nuts to see if they line up with the white tamper markings.

Ah great idea. Just called a dealer and they said everything looks fine on their end. Carfax is pristine too.

Good stuff this exactly the kind of insight I was hoping for! When looking for oil between engine/tranny, are we talking about oil dripping onto the pavement? Or just a light film on the coupling that I can only see when under the car?

Also the dealer (not Hyundai/Genesis) is including an overpriced LoJack add-on, which they say has already been installed. Unclear whether or not I can get them to take it off. afaik the techs have to tap into the wiring harness to install these… does anyone have experience with lojack-type trackers? I’m wondering if it would void the warranty on my wiring harness and/or cause any electrical issues down the line.

The oil can be a stain or dripping. Sometimes it's not an issue if you just see the stain, other times it's abig problem covered by warranty.

See this thread.
Oil leak near transmission / rear main seal

I don't know much about Lojacks and such but I would remove it for sure.

I had Lo-jack on an Infiniti I bought used. The first owner had it installed. I transferred the coverage to my ownership. There was no issue at the dealer with the installation when I had it there for service and they installed units themselves. I spent an hour with the Lo-jack rep and it is in a location nearly impossible to detect to prevent unauthorized removal, or that is where it should be. The original installer may be able to remove it. My car was made prior to contemporary cars that have tracking by internet as part of the OnStar, Blue and other manufacturer offerings. If it remains on the vehicle it is most important that the owner, you and succeeding ones, be aware of the device and the opportunity to transfer ownership or decline coverage. Lo-jack office confirmed my ownership with my documents to transfer and I told the next owner the same information.
edit: Dealer and Lo-jack declined to tell ME where the Lo-jack was located on the car. Security utmost.

There are pictures posted here on the oil drip issue between the engine and transmission bell housing if you do some searching. Have not seen any drips with my G70 at that location. If you have a sunroof, many have had squeaking and rattle noises generally on passenger side area that are difficult to correct, but not impossible. Some dealers have R&R’d entire sunroofs attempting to fix the issue. Just be aware of that potential for if that develops seems to be very annoying. My G70 has been fine so far in that regard. Also be aware connected services if you have to have remote start ability has many issues. When using mine it’s always a role of the dice if it will work or say make sure the car is in an unobstructed area. One week at work in the same parking spot it works fine, next week in the same parking spot it won’t connect at all. Now that it’s 100 deg in Texas, that is my biggest pet peeve not be able to remote start and cool the car down on a consistent basis. Genesis gets enough complaints about connected services they have to know an issue exist somewhere in the functionality or with their service provider Verizon. They are always updating Apps and wanting us to reset our head units which can cause you to re-enter all presets for the radio. A royal pain to deal with for something that should work 100% of the time.

Thanks for the replies guys. Want to let you know that I did buy the car, and now that I’m partway through the honeymoon phase I can tell you that I love it, no issues whatsoever thusfar. Although I did unplug the variable exhaust cause it just wasn’t loud enough in comfort mode :)
