  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

On the base G80 I've discovered that when selecting preset radio stations from the left side steering wheel button, sometimes I press the button up to go down the list, in another mode it's down to go down the list.

Here's a video showing what I mean.

Yes, it is dumb. People have tried to justify it but there is no sensible justification.

The purpose of the steering wheel control is to allow you to change stations and keep your eyes on the road. That's a good thing. However, when the navigation screen is on, the switch works opposite of the way you are used to. Plain dumb, no way to justify it. I'm sure there is a reason, bit it is not a good one. There is not another control on a car that reverses depending on the screen, nor should the station control.

IIRC, someone said it was corrected on new models but I don't know that for sure.

Maybe they can fix it on a MapnSoft update. I think those include OS updates for the base unit.

Would be nice. After five years and two cars I'm used to it, but it is still dumb.

Makes sense to me. I like it this way.
Care to share the thought process?

If I had to guess... on the screen where you see the pre-sets, you press down to go down the list, up to go up the list. Makes sense.

On the screen where you don't see them, you press up to increase (go up there dial), down to decrease or go down the list of pre-sets.

Never considered it was intentional. So I guess I have to look to see what screen I'm on to think about which way to press the button. Not how I'd design it.

The only medium I've ever listened to on my '19 G80 is Sirius/XM. Up on the steering wheel button goes up on the list, and vice versa. I don't know what the radio may do; I've not pre-set it or even used it. Same with the CD player, or any smart phone app, USBs, etc.

Right but when the navigation screen in on, it reverses.

In UX theory we have a concept called personal schema. It's how you think the world should work based on your personal experience.

So, in this case, if I'm looking at a sorted list I expect the switch motion to match the relative direction I want to move within that list.

And, because the HMI is designed to have the radio as the secondary screen , home as the primary, it makes sense to have up as move numerically increase because you can't see the list. And when you can, to match the motion with the desire.

The issue is muscle memory. How would you keep the motions the same...

You could reverse the list so it's descending but that means the list is always resorting. Very, very bad.

You could rotate the steering wheel button to be right to left but I personally think this is hard to find with my thumb. But then the list is visually vertical so this takes more thought processing for an interaction.

You could rotate the button and the UI so everything is right to left. Which solves all the issues but this doesn't fit their HMI UX.

So in the end, I like that they put thought into the 2 cases. Me, I'd prefer a right to left, horizontal list, as so many of my cars have had this it's my expectation.
