Hey guys,

LONGTIME lurker, first time poster here. I’m currently cross-shopping a 2026 Genesis GV80 3.5T against a BMW X5. On paper, the Genesis wins hands down for me - the interior layout is beautiful, the ride is insanely smooth, and frankly, I like the styling a lot better than what BMW is doing with their grilles lately.

My massive hang up right now is the dealership experience.

My local dealer is still one of those shared Hyundai/Genesis setups. The sales floor felt okay, but when I walked back to peek at the service bay, it looked chaotic. I've read some horror stories online about people paying $75k for a car and getting treated like they’re servicing an Accent - no loaners available, weeks out for an oil change appointment, etc.

For those of you who pulled the trigger, how has the actual ownership/service experience been? Is it as bad as the internet makes it out to be, or am I overthinking this?

Many service departments look chaotic; they have a lot going on. My experience has been good, but my dealer is not your dealer. There are many good ones you don't hear about.
Stop in the service waiting area and talk to the owners.

The weeks out for an oil change was common during covid, I can get i now in a couple of days. I was always offered a loaner but never took it. I'm retired so I'd with with my laptop and have a coffee.

Honestly, you’re overthinking it a bit. I’ve had my GV80 for a year and a half now, and yeah, my dealer is a shared location too, but they treat Genesis owners completely differently.

Whenever I need service, they do the valet pickup at my office, drop off a G80 loaner, and bring my car back washed. I barely ever step foot inside the physical dealership anyway. The car itself is so much better built than the modern German stuff that you won't even be dealing with service advisors that often anyway.

Don't let a minor detail stop you from buying the better vehicle. The X5 is a dime a dozen anyway lol.

my two cents..... buy the vehicle that you prefer driving. dealer experiences are a gamble no matter the brand. it's up to each dealership and the personnel 'de jour' that dictate experience. I have had exceptional experiences with Hyundai dealerships and lukewarm experiences at Genesis dealerships. I have owned both brands and am satisfied with them both. My worst experiences happened at with a large Toyota dealerships and many pleasant experiences at Acura and Honda. Set your expectations with each service provider upfront..at any brand...and adjust accordingly. I really enjoy owning Korea's vision of automotive transport.

Happy motoring.

Whos' your dealer, possibly some here have some insight for you?

I have a combo Genesis/Hyundai dealer as well, but they separate everything in the service end. different waiting room, different service desks etc.
My dealer (Genesis of Naples, FL) has been very good, but if you read here, you will see a lot of nightmares out there, a lot of them

I was on an Audi site for 4 years and rarely was service mentioned as an issue. I could always get an appointment he next day for any type of service.
My wife has a BMW and their service is the same way. Next day and even same day service if needed.

So it is very important that you vet your dealer.

Happy hunting.

I would not worry too much about the dual stores in 1 building aspect. Nor would I get too hung up on the "status" of expecting premium service because that is always hit and miss. What I worry about is the fact in certain areas Genesis does not have many dealers. In my case I am 60 miles from the dealer which is no big deal unless you have some issues. Plus 1 thing to check is that I heard (cannot say for sure) that Genesis roadside assistance will only tow your car to a Genesis dealer. So you get a flat and they tow you 60 miles down the road instead of to your local tire shop. Remember no spare tire. Stuff like that worries me. If you live in an area with multiple dealers within range, I would feel much better.

You guys in Naples are incredibly lucky then. Where I am, it’s a completely different story.

My dealer is a dual Hyundai/Genesis store, and it is an absolute zoo. I love my GV70, but the service side has been a total circus. Last month I had a hard shifting issue with the transmission. Called for an appointment - three weeks out. Asked for a loaner because I can't just maroon myself at work, and they told me the "Genesis fleet" was fully booked for a month, but they could rent me an Elantra for $40 a day. For a $65k vehicle!

When I showed up, I had to stand in the same chaotic line as people getting $19.99 oil changes on 10 year-old Elantras while the service advisors ran around sweating.

To the OP: That guy who said to check the roadside assistance policy is spot on too. If you have a standalone dedicated Genesis store near you, buy the car yesterday. It’s an amazing machine. But if you're stuck with a poorly managed joint dealership, just prepare yourself mentally for the reality that the "luxury concierge" experience is mostly marketing fluff in some regions.

I have heard many stories like yours, but it is not just the joint stores. It has even been the standalones. If good service is in a dealers DNA, they you should get good service no matter the type of car they are selling. I have a standalone genesis which is closer to me. When I got my car, they were a joint dealership with bad DNA. So I stay away and I have heard mixed things about them. I don't think because they are are stand alone, they will all of the sudden have them treat people better. But I could be wrong. (I am wrong a lot, ask my wife)
I am lucky. I have three dealerships within an hour from me. The Naples one is actually the farthest. The valet service is over for my car, but to me, I will make the longer drive.
I remember when my passenger window went down and stayed down, and I called Naples, the young lady that answered the phone told me appointments were 2 weeks out. I told here "This is florida in the summer. It is in the 90's and it rains every day. I need a car" She then said, bring it in tomorrow and we will see what we can do. I went in the next AM and they gave me a loaner and when it was done a few days later, they called me in and I got my car. And without even telling me, they replaced all the plastic molding around the side windows because they said they were faded. All under warranty.

You have to vet the dealership with this car. It will make or break your experience, as these cars are not trouble free.

That window story is awesome, and good for Naples Genesis for actually stepping up, but honestly? Reading all of this just reinforces why I'm hesitant to cross over from the German brands.

If I’m spending $70k to $80k on a luxury car, I shouldn't have to "vet" the dealership like I'm doing background checks, or drive an hour past two closer dealerships just to find one with good "DNA". Ya know what I'm saying? When you buy a BMW, Audi, or Lexus a baseline level of premium treatment is practically guaranteed across the network. You get a nice lounge, a reliable loaner pool, often an area to eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and advisors who know how to handle luxury clients.

I love what Genesis is doing with their designs. The GV80 has a Bentley feel to it. But if the service infrastructure is still this hit or miss nationwide, it feels like they’re trying to run before they can walk. I've been watching Genesis for a long time now. I like what I'm seeing. I just wish they'd make some improvements to the dealer experience.

To the OP: if you have a rock solid German dealer nearby, it’s hard to give up that peace of mind, even if the Genesis gives you more features for the money.

That's funny.
IRL are you a writer for a comedy show? Have you ever been to my Mercedes dealer?

On my final visit, I showed them a page from the service manual and explained why there "fix" of the cruise control failed. Lounge? Yeah, a few seats across from the service desk.

Audi service here is drastically different - one shop requires an appointment (usually weeks in advance for even an oil change) and rarely a loaner car is available - another Audi dealer doesn't even require an appointment - just arrive whenever you want and they pop you in a loaner car and you go on with your business....so definitely need to vet your service departments

Absolutely worst experience was at a BMW dealership.

The Merc dealership down the street was pretty smooth.

But yeah, greater chance with a "bad seed" with Genesis.

Just bought a 2026 GV80 3.5t Prestige Black , dealer experience no different than any other in my opinion & over the last few months I've been to alot of em in the NY westchester area and we have em all......what drove my decision was the car , I DONT trust any of em anyway......im taking the car home not the dealership !

Wow, I did not expect this many amazing replies! Thank you guys so much for the reality check.

Your comment really hit home for me: "I'm taking the car home, not the dealership". You're totally right. At the end of the day, I'm going to be sitting in the car for 365 days a year and only sitting in the dealership lounge maybe two or three times a year.

Hearing that even the German brands are a total gamble depending on the specific location makes me feel a lot better about taking a chance on Genesis. I went back to my local joint dealer yesterday afternoon, spent some more time looking over the GV80, and honestly, the car is just too good to pass up for an X5.

I'm going to set up a meeting with their dedicated Genesis manager this weekend to talk numbers and see if I can get a feel for how they handle their concierge service. I’ll keep you guys posted on how it goes and what I end up pulling the trigger on!

All brands have good dealerships and bad ones...
I have 2 Genesis dealerships within 15 miles of me. One is excellent, the other I wouldnt trust them with being to put fuel in the car.

Well, it may take an actual service visit to get a true perspective. Or, perhaps you could just visit the service dep't waiting area to have some informal chats with other customers for their opinions and histories.

You can also try getting an appointment with them an see how long it takes. Some have waited a month or so.
I hope you have a good one.

I know you've been around for a while - but since this was your first message - welcome aboard! And thank you for signing up. Just something to keep in mind: Most people don't share their positive experiences. When somebody has a bad one - one of the first things they want to do is tell the world. It's hard to get good reviews.

Like with any brand, there are legitimate complaints - and you'll find them here and around social media. But I think it's safe to say the majority of Genesis owners are happy with their service experience...

We recently purchased a GV80 3.5T.

I live near Ft Walton Beach where there is a combined Genesis/Hyundai dealership. I researched the faculty online and was left with an uneasy feeling. I visited just to check out their service center and was still unsure.

We have a Genesis dealership (not combined) in Pensacola. It’s an hour away, but was worth the extra few miles IMO. We purchased our vehicle there. They even honored the Genesis valet service. I was impressed with everything - better experience than Mercedes, etc. If it wasn’t for the Allen Turner Genesis stand alone facility, I won’t own a Genesis.

This is my own personal experience, others may vary.

You did your homework and it paid off. I went to a further dealership as well, and got good results. And it is a Genesis/Hyundai dealership. It great when you find a good one. I have been happy for over 4 years. Mine is over an hour as well and they too gave me valet service. But to be honest, most of the time when it is just routine service, I drive there and wait. I retired and don't mind the drive and I get to look at the new models. Mine is SW of you in Naples Florida. I have two that are a closer, but that is where I purchased it and where I go for service.
