  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Just started having an intermittent problem with the push button start system. On three separate occasion I've gotten in the car, pushed the start button with no effect . The car then tells me to put the key in the slot and when I do, the car starts no problem. When this happens, nothing that's proximity related works (can't lock/unlock the doors from the button on the door, etc.). As it's done it three times now, after a while, the system starts working normally again.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen and if so, what was the fix.

Thanks,
Mike

Hey Mike, since it tells you to place the remote in the slot, there must be a low battery problem. I'd replace the remote battery.

If it's not the battery in the fob, then check your main breaker type fuse located on the driver side. Open the door and the main fuses are on the side of the dash. The fuse with a yellow plastic housing is the main fuse. Ensure it's seated properly in place.

I had numorous electrical problems and I found that the fuse was not quite in all the way. Pushed it in and everything worked and returned to normal.

The car has a slew of antennas to work with the key fob - some outside (the door handles are antennas if I remember correctly) and some inside. Next time the fob won't work outside to unlock the car, walk to a different door and try again - if that consistently works, the antenna nearest the driver's door (or closest to wherever you were when it didn't work) might be flaky. However, since your car also seems to have trouble "seeing" the fob inside the car (where other antennas are involved) I'd bet the fob itself has issues. The dash slot is intended for a fob that can't transmit at all - busted fob or dead battery.

Like the other suggestions, a new fob battery is the first thing to check/try. Or try the other fob for a while if you can. If the second fob is flaky too then the bug is in the car itself - whatever module "listens" to the antennas may be the bug.

Sometimes if I have other keys in my pocket along with the Genny key fob it does happen.
Removing the other keys solves the issue inside the car.

Thanks for the suggestions but as for the battery, both fobs are inoperative when this happens so I highly doubt both batteries could go dead at the exact same time. Also, since this is intermittent, the fob is 'seen' by the system again and works just fine so again, don't think it's the fob.

I'll check the fuse today and see if that's not seated correctly.

I certainly hope this isn't something major with one of the many computers that control this car.

When the car won't start, check to see if brake lights work. If not, you have a defective brake light switch. Common problem with Hyundais.

I've had this problem several times in the past and I've found that after pressing and releasing the brake pedal several times (at least 3 seems to be the minimum required) the car will start.

Been there, done that. Had the same intermittent problems as you an figured I would change the battery but again I had the problem on occasions. Finally figured it out!

If the fob is in the same pocket as your cell phone or very close to it, it wont work. Take it out or away from the cell phone and everything is back to normal. ;)

Had the same problem with one of the keys...changed the batteries and problem solved. Try switching the batteries....and if that still doesn't do it then take it to the dealer :)

My 2009 Genesis sedan had/has the same problem(s). Took it to the dealer and their diagnosis was that the 'Shifter assembly' had to be replaced....ok no problem. Spent $567 for that and after the parts came in, they installed it. Car started literally twice after leaving the dealership before going back to not starting. Take it back and they keep the car for 4-days; I get a voicemail (missed the callback) which i dicated that they think it's involving the transmission-link and they'd be performing a nuch deeper diagnoses. They put me in a free loaner...a 2019 G70 and I end up having this car for 3-days. I get a call and head to turn-in the loaner and they then give me the damage: $11,000 worth of 'Over-all' maintenance needs....'BUT NO DEFINITIVE REASON FOR WHY IT ISN'T STARTING! they refund me the $567 shifter monies and although they were able to get the car started when I get there, they first suggest that I trade it in for another vehicle...still no answer for the intermittent starting issue. So; as of this entry, I've had the car towed to another Hyundai dealership for a second opinion (without letting them know of my passed diagnosis at the other dealership and am now awaiting a call with what they've diagnosed.....I'll add that entry when I get that call folks.....pray for me as I love this car and despite this issue, I've not had any other major mechanical issues.

Message light said can not recognize fob in car on my 2012 Hyundai 3.8 Genesis Sedan (101000 m) started every time until I drove it home 289 miles, parked car, cut it off, went out to start and nothing on push button. Installed fob in slot, pushed brake and start button car starts. Dealership did diagnosis $125 and suggested I start with 95420-3M150 smartkey interior antenna. Cost $458? Difficult to find diy replacement video. I was so excited that no codes appeared on my fixed analysis is reason I bought the car and paid the auto sales cost on the so called social media scare of limited cars. 1st time in 77 years I paid asking price for the more than 20 used cars I have bought especially for a 10 year old car with 101,000 miles and a $200,000+ mile life span. Amazon part number and ebay part are around $50 to $65 plus installation. I have read that the transmitter in fob could be bad but dealership checked fob twice. I have an appointment 289 miles away with another dealership that they will program the two new fobs. Oh only 2 fobs can be programmed for car. Technological stupidity at its best. Hope dealership can program new fobs without old fob to eliminate the transponder in fob being bad. I am going to check brake light and fuse box with my son in law mechanic today who has dealership quality testing instruments. Hate to go upside down on a used car because of typical used car issues that need fixing. 2. Only other issue with car that I know of after 1 week.
AC was overcharged and when checking released a freon smell and puff under car. AC ran ok after that but the hot days are coming. Dealership will evacuate the system, pull vacuum, and refill hope that fixes the problem. I too love the car for its ride, handling, comfort 5'10" 220lbs passenger room and trunk size to carry more than 2 sets of golf clubs.

from description its not related with start button. (since also lock-unlock doesnt work)

either in the fobkey or key signal receiver
