  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My Genesis Connected Services free 3 year promo subscription is about to expire (bought 2019 G70 in April 2019). I never used the app and don't really care about remote start, etc.

SiriusXM TRAFFIC free promo 3 year is also about to expire same date. Though I don't know if I ever used it.

I am keeping SXM music channels. I just negotiated a $5.99/month for the mid-tier channels package (don't listen to sports games so no worries). They said I can add the traffic subscription when my SXM traffic promo expires in a few weeks.

So...now I'm curious.

How is my navigation, traffic, and connected services tied together? Do I need connected services to use my navigation? Is SiriusXM traffic necessary for navigation? Does traffic work as part of the navigation without Connected Services or SXM?

Thanks. Just trying to make sure I don't add crap I don't need.

Navigations is stand alone. You don't need connected services or traffic with it.

I never found the traffic to be of any value. A couple of times it was like "yep, you are in traffic and no way around"

I really like the SXM and like you, have a cheap package. I only listed to a few channels for music but love no commercials.

Thanks for the response EdP. Very helpful, as always.

I also find the traffic feature to be useless. Google maps will show traffic congestion which is usually pretty accurate. SXM rarely shows any traffic and, when it does, is not accurate at all. I didn’t research it but I suspect it gets it’s traffic info from other SXM subscribers and there just aren’t enough of them to get reliable data. If I’m mistaken someone please chime in.

I seriously doubt it. I don’t think SXM is two way. There is no provision for sending data back. I believe it gets data from road sensors which feed data to government (state, county, etc) traffic monitors which then publish the data.

Yup…you are correct. I looked it up on their website and they claim to get their traffic info from a multitude of sources. Why it’s never accurate for me is a mystery. I-95 in northern VA could be backed up for miles and SXM shows nothing.

Garbage in, garbage out.

Is the traffic that shows on the navigation app the same as the SXM traffic you guys are talking about?

Either way, I also find the traffic out of date or not accurate, many times I'd be stuck in slow traffic while it's showing green on the map.

AFAIK:

Traffic for my 2018 G80 comes from SXM (at least when I had a subscriptions). It only covered major roads.

Traffic for your 2022 G70 comes from FM HD radio. Not all markets are transmitting this data. I don't know exactly when Genesis made this change, but it was SXM for the 2018 models, and it is FM by the 2022 models.
