Questions from Prospective Gen Owner!!

Hi All,

I'm still deciding whether to go forward with buying a Gen or fixing up and continuing my 8 years old black Altima 3.5SL. I'm still familiarizing with the Gen and am puzzled by a few things about it:

1. It seems like the majority go with black exterior. Is this like the trendiest and coolest "official" color of this sedan? Anyone with Red or White colors to share their experience? My current car is black and it always seems dirty, dirty only after a few hours of a wash so I gave up keeping it shiny!

2. Do the Gens like Mobil 1 or any full synthetic oil? I prefer this oil to get away from visiting a shop every 3, 4 months. Do they like regular gas?

3. Is there a luxury or premium dmv tax or insurance cost imposed on this car?

Appreciate any answers, insights.

1. I don't think black is the majority, although there are a lot of them. Probably more silver and grey (combined) than black. The members of this forum are not average car buyers. I would stay away from white due to exhaust soot from the 2012+ GDI engines (and even to some degree on older non-GDI engines).
2. Many people use a full synthetic, including myself. The V6 is designed to run on regular only, and the V8 will run on regular (with slight decrease in HP) or premium (or mid-grade).
3. No extra tax that I know of, but DMV's are run by each state, so don't know what your state does. Contact your insurance agent for premium pricing (I would guess that V8 is more to insure, but don't have any numbers).

Everywhere I look there're photos of black Gennies!
I recently kinda influenced my sister and she got one, 2012 black 3.8L, when she went to dealerships for an Elantra Limited. I like the bt music streaming which my sis seems very into.

Is the exhaust soot that bad that you have to avoid white? Black is impossible for me to kee up and to boost I park outside full time.

Is the red on this sedan really dazzling like it is on most expensive car? I know this is all preference but I haven't seen one in hyundai lots or streets nor have I experienced owning this color before. Just want to hear some pros and cons.

This is my second Genesis, and I got a black one. My first one was a white one. While I love both of 'em, my friends and family (my wife and my parents) have all commented that the black one looks better.

To answer number 3 of your OP, the V8 genesis is considered a high performance car by most insurance companies and therefore they do bump a premium a little. The V6 is no that way.

Re: number 3. If you are worried about cost of insurance being a little higher then you should not be purchasing a car at this high of a price point. Maybe think Sonata.

So, it's only a little higher? Then, I'm not worried. Thanks for the info.

To be more specific and hopefully raise the level of the discussion higher the trivia that homeofstone suggests, I actually anticipate the insr cost to be relative to the car's price. In other words I know how much I pay to cover my 30k car, is it gonna be a simple percentage increase for a car of $37K and no other stupid, hidden cost that I don't know about. Well, I haven't owned a "luxury" car like the Genesis before so I wouldn't know.

Apparently, OneFunGenesis just told me about the "high performance car" aspect that insurance companies consider. So there's such a category. I'm more resolved to choose the 3.8L over the 5.0 now. Thanks guys.

ps. I'm checking with my agent but she's been busy.

Depending on the country, state and city you live in, the cost of a license plate may be very hgih.

Insurance rates depend on many factors, and members of this forum pay wildly different rates (this has been docemented in other threads).

Insurance rates depend on where you live, past accident/citation history, demographics (gender, age, marital status, etc), deductibles, and the exact coverage desired. Only your agent can tell you how much you will pay.

OP, I too came from an altima. 2003 2.5SL to be exact. I went to the 2009 V8 and my insurance only went up $75 every 6 months. I am also 22 years old. That should give you a clue of how much it'll go up.

The amount of safety features in this things balance out the performance when talking to an insurance agent.

True, I came from a 2003 Elantra and my insurance is a little less I believe. I just don't tell my agent that I hit over 100mph every time I drive the car

1. Had a black car once. I agree too much work. White satin looks great and our last three cars were white. White does not show scratches nearly as bad as darker colors. Also, silver is a good color for low maintenance.

My Toyota Camry was a beautiful gold and it hid dirt and dust beautifully. I have a black Genesis and my OCD really comes out with this car. I enjoy detailing it and probably do as much now as I have done on all my cars. The black is much more noticable. My car is also garaged. While I love the black, down the road (if I don't keep it after the lease is up) I will get a gold car.

Had a white Azera. Liked it, but felt it showed the dirt just as much. It was not garaged.

Just a heads up... my 2007 50k BMW was around $1000 a year... and my wife's $24k 2009 CRV was around $1200 a year.

insurance as mentioned isnt directly related to price it consists of many variables.

What you and OneFun said is news to me. So interesting that they don't consider the price of the vehicle. I needed to fix my alti's front bumper and hood and HID head lights, $3000 and my sis barely scratched her Lexus IS250 and destroyed the driver side mirror and the whole front, side body panel, almost $4000. All paid by insurance. I figure it's always more expensive for insurance co. to pay for premium cars so they got to jack up the coverage cost.

I also have a 2012 crv and an accord so if it's bad i'm thinking of putting the gen as a pleasure, limited mile car.

Black is really really beautiful if you're obsessed with washing and buffing. I have had a gold camry in the past. Agree. It was the most beautiful overall and easy to maintain color to me.

He didn't say insurance companies don't consider the cost of the vehicle. Obviously that is a factor if it is stolen or totaled. It is just that there are many other factors.

Getting insurance rate quotes from members of this forum is idiotic, since you have no idea why it is they paid more for one car versus another. In some cases they may have had different coverage on one car versus another, or their age or marital status may have changed. In the case of the CRV it may be that statistically there are more thefts or more wrecks in that vehicle, we don't really know. Expensive cars are more likely to be garaged (because their owners are more likely to own a home with a garage), and it may be that those cars are stolen less often, but this is speculation.

Insurance companies use statistical analysis to set rates, and they might not know the real reason why some cars cost them more to insure than others, other than statistical analysis of claim history.
