  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

R-Spec Stalled on the Freeway

Ran into some issues with the R-Spec over the weekend. I had the car into the dealership on Friday to put some some fresh Pirellis, I had them check out the engine because the prior week the car stalled on me at a stop light, although I was able to be restarted immediately.

On Sunday, I was headed back home and within 30 seconds of getting onto the interstate, the check engine light started flickering and a few seconds later everything lit up and the car lost power. Fortunately, I was able to pull over with the momentum. As soon as I tried to restart the car, a cloud of smoke came out from the dash that filled up the car.

Had roadside assistance tow it back to the dealer that found no issues two days prior. They're taking it apart and having a field engineer check out the car.

Needless to say, I'm not too happy right now. They did hook me up with an Enterprise rental, although it's no R-Spec. I talked with the advisor and the engines locked up, so they'll probably have to replace it. I'll keep you guys updated on what happens with this issue.

When was the last time the oil level was checked? Some 5.0 engines have gotten fairly low on oil within just a few thousand miles of last oil change.

It should have been checked out two days prior to the incident at the dealer (I would imagine they would check the oil on top of pulling any potential error codes) Last oil change was right under 20k miles, so it was running a little over 4k before this failure.

With that said, the dealership contacted me and stated that it was at least one piston that disintegrated, I'll be requesting some pictures and post them here if I can pull them up from corporate. They should receive a brand new motor today, and it will take at least a working week to install it.

This was not the first time I have had issues with the vehicle either. At 6k miles the transmission had to be replaced due to a factory defect, along with similar issues with the motor. At around 15k the shifter would not pull out of park to drive, and I had to get it towed as well.

I absolutely love the R-Spec with the power and everything you get for under 50k, but it's been a headache with all the issues in the last two years. I hope the next gen has some significant improvements over the current one.

Sorry to hear it. My 5.0 2012 was low on oil with 2750 miles and was missing ~1.3qt; it started having startup problems. Drove it to dealer for documentation.

My 2012 Equus 5.0 quit when making a low speed left hand turn, restarted instantly and hasn't had the issue since. Hotline gave me an incident ID but it has not happened since. (5 months later)

New engine is in, but the fuel lines are on backorder. No eta given, said it could be anywhere from a few days to a month...

I wouldn't assume that they checked the oil level at that time. Based on the other information your provided about cylinder disintegration, excess oil consumption could have been the cause. Some other 5.0 owners have reported very high oil consumption, so that is why I mentioned it in the first place. I can't think of very many other reason why the Tau engine would suffer such catastrophic failure at such low mileage.

Got the car back yesterday, after 15 days.

Warranty covered about 13k worth of repairs, including a starter and an entire long block. It was Piston #5 that disintegrated and the connecting rod was damaged.

Got word from Hyundai that they'll be covering a payment on the car, which is nice, although I hope the overall value of the car isn't significantly tarnished because of all the issues.

Only time will tell about the overall value of the car, but, in cases like this, I'm very grateful to CarFax! :D

Does CarFax have info about repairs not related to insurance claims or traffic accidents?

I wouldn't count on it. Hell I've pulled up cars in CarFax that I know have been in serious accidents and there is no record of it.

Here's the real truth about CarFax: http://brokensecrets.com/2010/08/23/how-does-information-get-on-a-carfax-report/

That is proof no system is perfect. But, I've pulled up more than one CarFax and had items as small as replacing a bulb....... just sayin....

Also, there's HMA, right???? Damn, some peeps want to argue about anything!

If you pull a carfax on my Genny, it documents every oil change...not joking. That is how I found out that the previous owner of mine was a snowbird....

From what I have read, most insurance companies do not report to CarFax unless the car is totaled, but many large service and repair shops do report (since they get paid for the info). I suspect that if you deal with an independent shop, chances are less likely that something will be reported (as opposed to a chain). However, if damage occurred due to a traffic accident, and the police are called, it may be reported to Carfax in a State Motor Vehicle police report.

But this works both ways, as you want preventive maintenance reported (oil changes, etc) but probably would prefer to not have repairs reported.

Mark, congratulations........ finally someone who plays devil's advocate as often as I do. :)

As imperfect as any system may be, I'm very thankful to CarFax and any other system that will help the consumer. Don't know how old you are, but, waaay back in the day, odometer rollbacks were almost a given...... you get the idea, right? ;)

I ran the vin, and see no reports aside from the routine service.

On Monday, the car stalled again on the freeway. No power loss, but the car wouldn't start. Had it towed - dealer initially was able to start the car, although it didn't generate any codes. Further diagnostics revealed the left bank fuel injector was pushing a third of the nominal PSI.

Issues, issues, issues. I shot consumer affairs an email, I wonder if they'll step up,

Any news on your problem? I'm having lots of little nagging issues, but, nothing like the engine dying!

Hyundai has agreed to fully repurchase the vehicle (every penny), which is great to hear. The car was great, minus the nearly two months out of service in about two years. I'll likely be getting the next generation Genesis - hopefully without being a field tester this time :)
